Description Of Change: Ice lugs are commonly installed in the field on steel track grousers to increase penetration and traction on ice or hard packed snow. Caterpillar does not prohibit the use of properly installed aftermarket ice lugs.

Ice lugs installed in the wrong location or pattern can result in internal track joint damage and premature dry joints. As a result, Caterpillar Undercarriage Assurance (Caterpillar Warranty Bulletins 5.01, 5.02, 5.05 and 5.10) will no longer cover dry track joint repairs or replacement if ice lugs are not positioned correctly.

The change is effective with any ice lug installation after July 2018.

------ WARNING! ------

Do not operate or work on this product unless you have read and understood the instruction and warnings in the relevant Operation and Maintenance Manuals and relevant service literature. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Proper care is your responsibility.

Ice lug requirements (refer to illustrations):

  • Location on each shoe - Ice lug centerline is centered between track bolt centerlines. If not centered, then ice lug centerline is no more than 51 mm (2 inch) outside of the innermost bolt centerline. Refer to Illustrations 1,2, and 3.

  • Pattern in the track - At least one lug on every shoe. Two lugs per shoe are acceptable. Refer to Illustrations 4, and 5, and 6

  • Height - All ice lugs should be approximately the same height. Variable heights result in uneven track joint loading.

Incorrect location of ice lugs.
(D1) 102 mm (4 inch) to 152 mm (6 inch)

Ice lug centerline is greater than 51 mm (2 inch) away from track bolt centerline.

Conventional track (trapezoidal bolt pattern)
Correct location of Ice Lug centerline:
(D2) 0 to 51 mm (2 inch) from innermost bolt centerline

Ice lug center line is centered between bolts, or within (D2) of the track bolt centerline.

(A) No Lugs
(B) One Lug

Shoes marked with (A) have no lugs at all. Shoes marked with (B) have one lug. Requirement is to have at least one lug on each shoe to distribute roller loads evenly.

Correct ice lug pattern.

One lug per shoe in a "Z" pattern (center, outboard, center, inboard). All lugs are within the bolt centerline requirement.
