Introduction
This Special Instruction provides the procedure to Inspect, remove, install, and torque the locking ring assembly for Pipelayer counterweight frame concentric pins.
Safety
Do not attempt to disassemble or assemble this machine until you read and understand the disassembly and assembly instructions. Improper disassembly and assembly procedures could result in injury or death. |
Personal injury or death can result from improper lifting or blocking. When a hoist or jack is used to lift any part or component, stand clear of the area. Be sure the hoist or jack has the correct capacity to lift a component. Install blocks or stands before performance of any work under a heavy component. Approximate weights of the components are shown. Clean all surfaces where parts are to be installed. |

Inspection Process
- Verify that all cap screws are to torque specification 40.7 ± 8 N·m (30 ±6 lb ft).
- Disassemble pins and remove H-Frame.
- Measure frame bore 80.0 ± 0.25 mm (3.15 ± 0.01 inch) holes and 135-0013 Pin diameter of 50.8 ± 0.05 mm (2.0 ± 0.002 inch).
- 135-0013 Pin diameter 50.8 ± 0.05 mm (2.0 ± 0.002 inch)
- If inspection of components are to print dimensions, reinstalled the H-Frame and concentric pins into the bores.
- Use the spader tool to turn the concentric pin in the appropriate direction to take up slack in the frame joint.
- Follow the ""Assembly Procedure" " to install and torque the locking assemblies correctly.
- If frame bores are found to be oversize, proceed to ""Weld and Machining Repair Process" ".

Assemble the pins and locking assemblies. Torque the locking assemblies to 40.7 ± 8 N·m (30 ±6 lb ft). The lock collar assemblies must be installed with the cap screws flush with the frames and the collars set in slightly.
- Install the concentric pin in the upper bore.
- Separate the lock ring and position the inner ring in the bore first. Then, position the outer ring. Install all of the bolts finger tight.
- Separate a second lock ring and position the inner ring in the bore at the other end of the pin. Then, position the outer ring. Install all of the bolts finger tight.
- Use tooling to turn the pin and hold steady. Turn the pin in the appropriate direction to take up slack in the frame joint. It is important to turn the pin in the same direction when tightening the lock rings on each end of the same pin. Do not use an impact gun.
- Tighten the locking screws gradually in a diametrically opposite sequence as follows:
- Hand tighten the locking screws.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten the screws further to approximately one half the specified torque.
- Using the torque wrench, tighten the screws to full tightening to a torque of 40 N·m (30 lb ft).
- Hand tighten the locking screws.
- Verify that the screws are completely tight by applying the specified tightening torque of 40 N·m (30 lb ft).
Weld and Machining Repair Process
- Remove outer H-Frame assembly.
- Cover appropriate areas of tractor that can be affected by weld spatter.
- Weld up appropriate weld bores minimizing heat generation by rotating between ears as needed.
- Re machine the bores to 80 ± 0.25 mm (3.15 ± 0.01 inch)class A holes.
- Reassemble.
Fabricate a spader tool for holding the concentric pin using the dimensions in Illustrations 7, 8, and 9.
