The new paint system consists of a urethane topcoat and epoxy primer that reduces the blistering and discoloration on truck bodies that are equipped with a body heat option. The new paint system is better suited to withstand exposure to exhaust temperatures. The new paint system can be used on any of the above listed machines.
The new urethane topcoat is Valspar KPY0389 Caterpillar Yellow High Heat Urethane Topcoat. The new epoxy primer is Valspar EEA0153 Gray Epoxy Primer. Both paints require a catalyst as listed in Table 1. Caterpillar does not currently stock the epoxy primer and urethane topcoat in the parts and service distribution system. Contact a Valspar distributor for information and availability.
Use the following procedure to apply the epoxy primer, and the urethane topcoat.

- Sand the affected area. Wipe the area with a clean tack cloth.
- Mix the epoxy primer (1) at a ratio of ten parts of primer to one part CEC0120 Epoxy Catalyst. After mixing, the primer is ready for application with no additional solvent reduction required.
- Apply a thin to medium coat to the desired area. Avoid runs and sags. Allow the primer to dry for 20 to 40 minutes before the application of the urethane topcoat.
- Mix the urethane topcoat (2) at a ratio of three parts of topcoat to one part 53-X145A Urethane Catalyst. After mixing, the topcoat is ready for application with no additional solvent reduction required.
Note: Do not apply the urethane topcoat with the application equipment that was used to apply the epoxy primer without flushing the equipment. The epoxy primer and the urethane topcoat are not compatible and will gel if mixed together.
- Apply urethane topcoat (2) to the desired area according to the instruction from the manufacturer.
Note: If you do not force dry (FD) the area per the instruction from the manufacturer, allow 24 to 48 hours to cure.
