Fuel Pump And Governor Drive

Usage:

Removal And Installation

1. Drain the fuel from the fuel filter housing. Remove the governor control linkage.

1-Bolts. 2-Injection lines. 3-Safety shut-off reset cable (if equipped with safety shut-off).

2. Remove the fuel supply and fuel bleed lines at the front of the fuel injection pump housing.

3. Remove one exhaust manifold shield and oil lines to the safety shut-off control. See covering topics.

4. Remove bolts (1) that secure the governor and fuel injection pump housing to the engine.

4-Turbocharger oil lines (four). 5-Engine lifting bracket. 6-Cover. 7-Oil pressure switch and adapter.

NOTE: A 3/8" NC forged eyebolt may be installed at the rear of the fuel pump and governor drive housing to aid in removal of the unit.

5. Use a hoist and remove the injection pump housing and fuel pump and governor drive housing as a unit. Approximate weight is 350 lb. (159,8 kg).

As the housings are lifted off, the vertical oil supply tube from the main oil manifold to the fuel pump and governor drive oil manifold may remain in the main oil manifold. Inspect the top and bottom seals on this tube before installation of the housings.

6. Replace gaskets and seals as necessary. Apply 7M7260 Liquid Gasket Material to the cylinder block and mating surfaces of housings.

7. Install in reverse order of removal.

NOTE: For the correct timing procedure, see the topic TIMING THE FUEL INJECTION PUMP CAMSHAFT.

Fuel Injection Pump Housing Removal and Installation

1. Remove the governor. See covering topic.

2. Remove the bolts that hold the fuel pump and governor drive housing (1) to the fuel injection pump housing (2).

3. As the housings are separated, oil tube (4) will slip from its seat in injection pump housing and drive coupling (3) will slip off the drive shaft.

NOTICE

When assembling the injection pump housing to the governor drive housing, be sure the housings are aligned correctly so oil tube (4) will engage its seat in the injection pump housing.

4. Inspect all gaskets and seals. Install injection pump housing in reverse order of removal.

Disassembly And Assembly

Governor Drive, Safety Shut-Off Plunger and Manual Shut-Off Shaft

1. Pull pin (1) with pliers.

NOTE: When installing shaft (2), be sure the pin (1) engages the groove in the shaft and the shaft turns freely. The spring should hook over the pin and around the shaft lever.

NOTE: Backlash between the pinion and drive gear is adjusted with shims under the fuel pump governor drive shaft thrust plate.

2. Remove safety shut-off plunger (3) after the safety shut-off control is removed. See the covering topic.

3. Remove the snap ring which holds retainer (7) on shaft (9).

REMOVING DRIVE SHAFT
10-Locknut. 11-Gear. 12-Bolts. 13-Shaft drive gear. 14-Thrust plate. 15-Drive shaft. 16-Gear.

4. Remove shaft drive gear (13) by turning the puller bolt assembly counterclockwise. This forces a collar on the bolt against the plate on the gear hub, thus pulling the gear. At assembly and after timing, tighten bolt assembly to torque of 265 ± 35 lb. ft. (36,6 ± 4,8 mkg). See the topic TIMING THE FUEL INJECTION PUMP CAMSHAFT.

5. Inspect and install new parts if necessary.

NOTE: SAE opposite rotation engines use a different pinion and gear (11) than SAE standard rotation engines. This is to retain the same counterclockwise direction of rotation (viewing drive end) of safety shut off control.

Adjustment

To check the backlash between the pinion and bevel gear, set up a dial indicator by use of parts from the 8S2328 Dial Test Indicator Group, as shown in the illustration.

Adjust the backlash to .002 - .006 in. (0,05 - 0,15 mm) by removing or adding shims (2) behind thrust plate (1).

Safety Shut-Off And Tachometer Drive

Removal and Installation

REMOVAL OF SAFETY SHUT-OFF CONTROL
1-Tachometer drive. 2-Safety shut-off control.

Remove safety shut-off control (2) and tachometer drive (1) if so equipped. See the covering topic.

Use a 5/8 in. (15,8 mm) diameter driver to drive gear from thrust washer.

NOTE: At assembly, heat the thrust washer to 250° F. (120° C.) and push the washer on gear until flush with top of gear. There should be .015 - .045 in. (0,38 - 1,14 mm) end clearance.

Install a new bearing in the housing if necessary.
