Final Drive Components (1) Sun gear (2) Planetary gears (3) Ring gear (4) Planetary carrier (5) Bearing housing for the wheel bearings (6) Axle shaft |
Each final drive has the same components. The final drive causes the last speed reduction and the torque increase in the power train.
Ring gear (3) is fastened between the axle housing and the bearing housing for the wheel bearings (5). Ring gear (3), the axle housing, and the bearing housing for the wheel bearings (5) are held stationary.
The axle shaft is connected to the differential by splines. Sun gear (1) is connected to the axle shaft by splines. Sun gear (1) is engaged with planetary gears (2). Planetary gears (2) are held in planetary carrier (4). Planetary carrier (4) is connected to axle shaft (6) by splines.
Power from the differential turns the axle shaft. The axle shaft turns sun gear (1). Sun gear (1) turns planetary gears (2). Ring gear (3) is held by bearing housing (5) and the axle housing. The planetary gears move around the inside of ring gear (3). The movement of the planetary gears causes planetary carrier (4) to turn. The planetary carrier (4) is turned in the same direction as sun gear (1) but at a slower speed. The planetary carrier (4) turns axle shaft (6). Axle shaft (6) turns the wheel.
The final drive groups and the differentials are lubricated by oil within the axle housings. The filler plug supplies the axle housing, the differential, and the final drives with oil. The filler plug is located on the axle housing. Oil is removed from the axle housing through drain plugs on the axle housing.
