Introduction
The 6N9829 Adapter Group gives the necessary parts to connect CT700, HT700, 5000 and 6000 Series Allison Transmissions to 3406 and 3408 truck engines and industrial engines with SAE #1 housings.
This adapter group cannot be used on 3406 truck engines which are installed in the truck with the engine tilted, unless it has a 700 Series transmission, or on engines equiped with a Brakesaver.
On all engines except 3406 Truck Engines 92U19776 and up, and 3408 Truck Engines 28V2048 and up, modifications must be made to the flywheel housing before the transmission can be installed on the engine.

Installation
6N9829 Flywheel Adapter Group
1. Remove flywheel (1). Refer to Service Manual for removal instructions.
2. Remove starter (2). Refer to Service Manual for removal instructions.
3. Drill hole (A)1 in the flywheel housing to 23.8 mm (.94 in) diameter and make threads with a 1 in-14 tap in the hole.
Use a steel chisel to damage the threads on the end of hole (A) toward the flywheel. This will not let the plug go inside the flywheel housing.
If a 5000, 6000, or HT700 Series transmission is to be used, drill hole (B) to 11.13 mm (.44 in) diameter and 51.0 mm (2.0 in) deep.
Hole (A) gives access to the transmission coupling bolts. Hole (B) is an oil drain hole from the flywheel housing to the transmission. Throughly clean the flywheel housing and holes (A) and (B).
1This modification is not needed on truck engines that begin with the serial numbers that follow: 3406 - 92U19776 and 3408 - 28V2048.
NOTICE |
---|
Hole (B) must be made when a power takeoff is used with HT700 transmissions. Make sure plug (3) does not cause restrictions of hole (B). |
4. Install 6N9667 Flywheel (4) on the crankshaft with 8L7951 Bolts. Use engine oil as a lubricant on the threads of bolts (5) before installation. Tighten bolts (5) to 270 N·m (200 lb ft) torque. Install discs (6) and bolts (7), which are part of the transmission, on the flywheel.
5. Heat 7N6114 Bushing (8) to 320°C (608°F) and install it on torque converter hub (9). Be sure the bushing bore is pressed tight against the end of the torque converter hub.
6. Install 6N9918 Adapter (10) and gasket (11). Use Allison part number 5181902 Gasket (11) on each side of adapter (10). Turn the crankshaft so one of the holes (C) in flywheel (4) is in alignment with hole (A).
7. Turn the transmission shaft so that a hole in transmission adapter (12) will be in approximate alignment with holes (A) and (C) and then install the transmission to the flywheel housing. Turn the crankshaft and transmission shaft as needed so that holes (A) and (C) and the hole in the transmission adapter are in alignment.
8. Install a 138307 Bolt (13) through holes (A) and (C) and into the transmission adapter, but do not fully tighten the bolt. Turn the crankshaft until the next hole (C) in the flywheel is in alignment with hole (A) and install another bolt (13). Use this procedure until all bolts (13) are installed. Tighten bolts (13) to Allison specifications.
9. Place 9S3263 Thread Lock on the threads of 5P4907 Set Screw (14) and install the screw in hole (A) from the engine side of the flywheel housing. The set screw must be completely in hole (A) so that the end of the set screw is even with the outer face of the flywheel housing. Install the starter with 4H7869 Gasket (15) between the starter and the flywheel housing.
10. If an HT700 Series transmission is not used, remove the drain plug in the bottom of the flywheel housing.
If a Power Take Off (P.T.O.) drive is used on the transmission, do NOT remove the drain plug.
7N0205 Flywheel Adapter Group
The 7N0205 Adapter Group has the necessary parts to connect the 6000 Series Allison Transmission to 3412 Engines with S.A.E. number 0 - Housings.
1. Remove flywheel (1) and the starting motor (2) on the left side of the engine.
2. With a 29.3 mm (1.15 in) diameter drill bit, drill hole (D) through flywheel housing (16), from the flywheel side. Make pipe threads in hole (D) with a 1 in - 111/2 tap, from the cylinder block side of the flywheel housing.
3. Install flywheel (17) on the crankshaft. Use engine oil as a lubricant on bolt threads (18). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 286 N·m (212 lb ft). Heat 7N6114 Bushing (19) to 316°C (600°F) and install it on torque converter hub (20).
4. Install adapter (21) to the transmission. Use 518902 Detroit Allison Gasket (22). Tighten the bolts to 70 ± 14 N·m (50 ± 10 lb ft) torque.
Install Detroit Allison Coupling Assembly (23) to 7N6693 Adapter (24) with 9409056 Bolts (25). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 20-30 N·m (15-20 lb ft).
Fasten coupling (23) to the transmission flywheel with 9409058 Bolts. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 20-30 N·m (15-20 lb ft).
5. Align hole (E) in the flywheel with access hole (D), through flywheel housing (16). Install the transmission to the engine. Use a 6L3286 Gasket (26) between adapter (21) and flywheel housing (16).
Fasten adapter (24) to flywheel (17) with a 6J2515 Bolt (27). Do not tighten bolt (27). Turn the engine crankshaft until another hole is in alignment with access hole (D). After all bolts are installed, tighten bolts (27) and (28) to standard torque specifications.
