Vibratory Compactors
Introduction
This special instruction provides the necessary information to adjust the objectionable visual effect of runout on the Vibratory Compactors listed above. The visual effect observed does not affect the performance of the machine.
Do not perform any procedure outlined in this publication, or order any parts until you read and understand the information contained within.
Clean all surfaces where tools are to be installed.
Adjustment Procedure
1. Move the machine to a smooth level surface. Stop the engine, place the propel control handle in neutral and apply the parking brake. Use a suitable lifting device to place the machine up on stands, Tool A, with the drums suspended slightly above the ground as shown in illustration 1.
2. Attach a dial indicator, Tool B, to the machine, in the location shown in illustration 1, so the indicator will contact the drum approximately 6 inches in from the edge of the drum.
3. Clean all dirt and debris from the surface of the drum along the path that the dial indicator will travel.
4. Position the dial indicator against the drum, perpendicular to the surface, as shown in illustration 1. Set the dial indicator to zero, make sure to allow enough indicator travel in both the positive and negative directions.
5. Start the engine, release the parking brake, and move the propel control handle in either forward or reverse direction until the drum begins to rotate slowly.
6. Rotate the drum 360 degrees while reading the dial indicator. Mark the areas on the drum where the indicator gives the highest and lowest readings. Record these readings.
Illustration 1.
7. Maximum allowable runout is 6 mm, (.250 in.). If the total runout exceeds this limit, proceed with Step 8. If the total runout does not exceed this limit, proceed with Step 12.
Illustration 2.
8. Rotate drum to locate the point of highest indicator reading at the 12 o'clock position.
9. Slightly loosen all bolts (1) that fasten the drum support plate to the rubber isolation mounts as shown in illustration 2, enough to allow the drum to lower. Re-tighten and torque all bolts to the standard torque.
10. Repeat steps 4 - 6, mark and record the highest and lowest indicator readings. The point of highest indicator reading after step 9 may be different than the first time check in step 6.
NOTE: If total runout still exceeds tolerance, position the point of highest indicator reading at the 12 o'clock position and proceed with Step 11.
11. Slightly loosen all bolts (2) fastening the rubber isolation mounts to the drum, allowing the drum to lower. Re-tighten and torque all bolts to the standard torque.
NOTE: To access the nuts on bolts (2), on the vibratory end of the drum, it will be necessary to remove the cover plate assembly (3).
12. When total runout is within tolerance, reposition dial indicator on opposite end of drum and repeat procedure.
13. Repeat procedure for remaining drum.
