Crankshaft

Usage:

Remove Crankshaft

start by:

a) remove flywheel housing

b) remove timing gear cover

c) remove pistons

1. Turn the crankshaft until the "C" mark on the crankshaft gear (1) is in alignment with the "C" mark on the camshaft gear (2).

2. Put a mark on the teeth of the accessory drive shaft gear and idler gear at location (A). Put a mark on the teeth of the idler gear and camshaft gear at location (B). This will make correct timing for the camshaft of the fuel injection pump.

3. Fasten a hoist to the crankshaft.

4. Remove the caps for the crankshaft main bearings.

5. Remove the crankshaft. Weight of the crankshaft is 200 lb. (91 kg).

6. Remove the crankshaft main bearings from the cylinder block and from the main bearing caps.

Install Crankshaft

1. Clean the bearing surfaces in the cylinder block. Install the upper halves of main bearings in the block. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on the bearings.

2. Fasten a hoist and put the crankshaft in position in the cylinder block with all the timing marks in alignment.

3. Clean the bearing surfaces of the main bearing caps. Install lower halves of the main bearings in the caps.

4. Check the main bearing clearance with wire (A). Install the caps in their respective positions with the number on cap in alignment with the number on the pan face on the left side of the cylinder block.

5. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on the bearing bolt threads and the face of the washers. Install the remainder of the bolts and washers. Tighten both bolts to a torque of 30 ± 3 lb. ft. (4.1 ± 0.4 mkg). Put a mark on both bolt heads and bearing caps. Tighten each bolt an additional 90° from mark. Remove bearing caps and measure thickness of wire (A). Main bearing clearance with new bearings must be .0030 to .0065 in. (0.076 to 0.165 mm). Maximum permissible bearing clearance with used bearings is .010 in. (0.25 mm).

6. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on the lower halves of the main bearings. Install the main bearing caps in their respective positions. Install bolts and washers for bearing caps. Tighten both bolts to a torque of 30 ± 3 lb.ft. (4.1 ± 0.4 mkg). Put a mark on both bolt heads and bearing caps. Tighten each bolt an additional 90° from mark.

7. Check the crankshaft end play that is controlled by the thrust bearing (1) on the rear main bearing with tool group (B). The end play with new bearings must be .0025 - .0145 in. (0.064 - 0.638 mm). Maximum permissible end play with used bearings is .025 in. (0.64 mm).

NOTE: Install thrust bearing with the side having the identification "BLOCK SIDE" toward the cylinder block.

8. If the accessory drive shaft and gear, idler gear, or camshaft gear has been removed or if a replacement of the crankshaft gear has been made, it will be necessary to put the accessory drive shaft in time after assembling the engine. See REMOVE AND INSTALL FUEL INJECTION PUMP HOUSING AND GOVERNOR AS A UNIT.

end by:

a) install pistons

b) install timing gear cover

c) install flywheel housing
