Introduction
This guideline enables dealers and their
customers to benefit from cost reductions made possible
through an established parts reusability and salvage program.
Every effort has been made to provide the most current
and relevant information known to Caterpillar Inc.
Since the Company makes ongoing changes and
improvements to its products, this guideline must be used with
the latest technical information available from Caterpillar to
ensure such changes and improvements are incorporated where
applicable.
For questions or additional information
concerning this guideline, contact Caterpillar Service Support
Division, Dealer Support (309) 675-5156.
Summary
The purpose of this publication is to
provide the necessary information required to salvage and/or
reuse major components on the ?Final Drive, Steering System,
Wheel Braking System, and Wheels & Tires?.
The information included in this publication and in the
guidelines listed in SEBF8029, ?Index of Publications on
Reusability or Salvage of Used Parts? should be used to
determine if a component can be used again or requires
replacement. These
guidelines must be used with the latest information available
from Caterpillar Inc. to ensure that necessary changes and
improvements are incorporated.
When the words ?Use
again? are in the description, the specifications given
can be used to determine if a part can be used again.
If the part is equal to or within the given
specification, use the part again.
When the word ?Permissible?
is in the description, the specifications given contain the
minimum or maximum tolerances permitted before adjustment,
repair, and/or new parts are needed.
A comparison can be made between the measurements of a
worn part and the specifications of a new part to determine
the amount of wear. A
part that is worn, may be safe to use if an estimate of the
remainder of its service life can be established.
If the estimate shows a short service life is expected,
replace the part.
Important
Safety Information
Most accidents involving product
operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to
observe basic safety rules or precautions.
An accident can often be avoided by recognizing
potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs.
A person must be alert to potential hazards.
This person should also have the necessary training,
skills, and tools to perform these functions correctly.
Read and understand all safety
precautions and warnings before operating or performing
lubrication, maintenance, and repair on this product.
Basic safety precautions are listed in
the ?Safety? section of the Service or Technical Manual.
Additional safety precautions are listed in the
?Safety? section of the owner/operation/maintenance
publication. Specific
safety warnings for all these publications are provided in the
description or operation where the hazards exist.
WARNING labels have also been put on
specific hazards. If
these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death
could occur to you or other persons.
Warnings in this publication and on the product labels
are identified by the following symbol.
Show/hide table
Incorrect operation, lubrication,
maintenance, or repair of this product can be
dangerous and could result in injury or death.
Do not operate or perform any lubrication,
maintenance or repair on this product until you have
read and understood the operation, lubrication,
maintenance, and repair information.
|
Operations that may cause damage to the
product are identified by NOTICE labels on the product and in
this publication.
Caterpillar Inc. cannot anticipate every
possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard. The warnings in this publication and on the product are
therefore not all inclusive.
If a tool, procedure, work method, or operating
technique not specifically recommended by Caterpillar is used,
you must satisfy yourself that it is safe for you and others.
You should also ensure that the product will not be
damaged or made unsafe by the operation, lubrication,
maintenance, or repair procedures you choose.
The information, specifications, and
illustrations in this publication are based on information
available at the time it was written.
Such information as specifications, torques, pressures,
measurements, adjustments, illustrations, and other data can
change at any time that can affect the servicing of the
product. Make
sure to obtain the most complete and most current information
before starting any job. Caterpillar dealers have the most current information
available.
This guideline provides a complete list
of the material contained in SEBF8318.
The items listed can be ordered separately.
When items are updated or supplements are added, they
will be announced in Preview and automatically provided to
subscribers of this manual.
