Problem
Testing has identified a potentially hazardous condition with the radiator fan support bracket on certain 3500 generator set engines. A potential fracture point has been detected on the fan support bracket. Initial cracking of the fan support bracket will cause vibration in the fan assembly during operation. Continued operation may result in the failure of the support bracket which could lead to disengagement of the fan, damage to the radiator core and a potential for personal injury.

Rework Procedure
This is a two person job. Support of the radiator fan and positioning of fan drive support beam is required.
Reference attached drawing.
1.0 Ensure the engine has cooled sufficiently to prevent personal injury from contact with hot cooling tubes and the starting system is disabled by removing battery negative terminal or turning battery disconnect switch to the off position.
1.1 Remove all guards from the fan drive shaft (11), pulley (10), and belts (2). The fan guards can remain in place.
1.2 If equipped, remove the fuel cooler from the radiator crossbeam (4) without disconnecting the hoses and move and secure out of the way.
1.3 Remove all grease lines from the fan drive (12 &14) and fan belt tightener (5), remove the fan belts, and fan belt tightener.
1.4 IMPORTANT! Measure and record the distance between the centerline of the fan pulley (10) and the centerline of the crank pulley. This dimension must be duplicated with the new crossbeam. Accuracy of the measurement must be within ± 5mm.
1.5 Remove the sellock (roll) pins from the fan drive shaft pillow blocks (15) and loosen, but do not remove, the 4 bolts holding the pillow block to the mounting plate.
1.6. Remove the fan pulley and idler pulley (16).
1.7 Take the weight of the fan (13), drive shaft (11), and bearing assembly (12 &14) off the crossbeam by lifting the drive shaft.
NOTE: Make sure the fan does not tilt and damage the radiator core.
Secure the fan, drive shaft, pulley and bearing assembly. Remove the 4 bolts holding the pillow block to the mounting plate.
1.8. Remove the sellock (roll) pins from the ends of the crossbeam (4) where it is bolted to the radiator support legs (6 & 8). Remove the 4 bolts on each side and discard.
1.9 Carefully remove the crossbeam.
NOTE: Depending on the installation and radiator size and type it may be necessary to remove one of the radiator support legs to remove the crossbeam assembly, and/or the engine water by-pass line, and/or the SCAC water lines. If so, drain coolant into containers for reinstallation.
2.0 Install the new crossbeam, but do not tighten the mounting bolts.
NOTE: New fasteners should be used for re-assembly of all components.
2.1 Install the fan drive pulley.
NOTE: Two adjustments are required; first, the center distance measured in Step 1.4 must be duplicated by adding shims as required. Second, the fan drive pulley, crank pulley, and idler pulley alignment fore - and - aft, to allow the belts to run true, is also required.
2.2 Place 30mm and 15mm thick spacers directly underneath the pillow blocks. Add additional thinner shims as required to bring the center distance to the same dimension as measured in Step 1.4. These thinner shims must be placed between the thicker spacers and the crossbeam fan drive support plate.
2.3 Install the pillow blocks to support plate fasteners, but do not tighten, allow the weight of the fan, drive shaft, pulley, and bearing assembly to rest on the shim pack.
2.4 Check to see that Step 1.4 dimension is duplicated.
2.5 Spin the fan and check for concentricity with the cowl ring. Adjust as necessary.
2.6 Install the new belt tightener assembly to the bracket on the cross beam and install the idler pulley.
2.7 Align the idler pulley, fan pulley, and crank pulley.
2.8 Torque the crossbeam to radiator support bolts and drill and assemble the sellock (roll) pins avoiding the existing holes.
2.9 Torque all the remaining fasteners.
2.10 Install and tension the fan belts.
2.11 If equipped, install the fuel cooler.
2.12 Install the belt guards and the new shaft guard and grease lines.
2.13 If removed, install by-pass lines, SCAC water line and refill cooling system.
2.14 Reconnect battery negative terminal or return disconnect switch to on position and return unit to service.
