Action Required
The rear cam drive gear groups may be found with pitting or broken teeth on the small gear of the cluster gear assembly and the idler gear assembly. The bolts that retain the idler shafts to the cylinder block may be loose or broken, and/or the idler gear bearings may be found to have pitting. New gear assemblies, shafts, and bolts need to be installed on engines listed in Group 1. New sleeve bearings need to be installed in the existing gear assemblies and new shafts and bolts need to be installed on engines listed in Group 2. Refer to the May 13, 1991 Service Magazine article "Rear Gear (Cam Drive) Groups Improved" for additional information on the new parts. The article contains the necessary information for installing the new sleeve bearings in the engines listed under Group 2. Follow the procedures in the Service Manual. When installing the new 4P5090 Idler Gear Shafts, follow instructions in Guideline For Reusable Parts, Form SEBF8166, "Salvage Procedures For Bolt Holes in the Block For Idler Gear Shafts In Rear Gear Train 3500 Family of Engines."
