Problem

The 9S1354 Nuts that retain the cable assembly need to be checked for correct
torque on certain D6H, D7H, and D8N Tractors equipped with differential
steering. The nuts are located in the 6Y5501 or 6Y3317 Steering And
Transmission Control Group.

torque on the products listed below. The repair will be done at no cost to
you.

this service performed. The repair time for this service is approximately 1
1/2 hours.

Rework Procedure
NOTE: Park the machine on a level surface and block to prevent movement
when the parking brake is released.
1. Modify a 15/16" twelve point box wrench with an offset handle by cutting
out a 1" section to make it open ended, and grinding the outside
diameter of the box end resulting in a 1/16" wall thickness. A 5P0329
Crowfoot Socket could also be similarly modified.
2. On the D7H & D8N Tractors, remove floor plate and disconnect steering
linkage. On the D6H Tractors, the floor plate does not have to be
removed, because the steering linkage can be disconnected by removing
the rod assembly at the bottom of the dual twist tiller tail shaft
(involves 5S7383 bolt, 2K4973 nut).
3. At the side panel near the left hand arm rest, remove the 2 bolts on the
top, the 2 bolts on the bottom, the 2 bolts from the small access cover,
and the bolt underneath. This will allow the panel to be removed. On a
D6H Tractors, remove the rod assembly (5S7343 Bolt, 2K4973 Lock-Nut) at
the bottom of the dual twist tiller tail shaft, and this will disconnect
the steering linkage.
4. Tighten the front cable assembly retaining nut by holding the cable with
locking pliers and tightening the nut to a torque of 38 N.m (28 lb ft).
5. To get to the back retaining nut, move the parking brake lever to off
position, remove the remaining domed allen head fastener, and rotate the
tiller bar all the way to the left. This back retaining nut can now be
tightened to a torque of 38 N.m (28 lb ft).
6. Rotate the tiller bar back, connect the linkage, and make sure that the
parking brake handle will go straight up. If it won't, the steering
linkage will have to be slightly adjusted. Assemble and install the
remaining parts.
