Bore Vee Engines

Engines after a period of time can have problems with liner seat erosion and/or cracks in cylinder block counterbores. Several shims and inserts are available for use during reconditioning of the cylinder blocks and spacer plates in the above engines. Also, there are several Special Instructions available which give instructions for reconditioning engines with these problems.

The shims are used to increase cylinder liner projection and to make up for small amounts of fretting around the liners. They are installed under the flange of the liner.

"L-shaped" inserts can be used in cylinder blocks with counterbores. They are used where the cracks extend to a maximum of 180° around the cylinder bore. "Z-shaped" inserts are used in these cylinder blocks where the cracks extend more than 180°.

Inserts are also available for use on engines with spacer plate blocks. These inserts are made from stainless steel and are available in two different thicknesses, 1.595 mm (.0628") and 3.246 mm (.1278"). The thickness of the insert to be used is controlled by the amount of erosion in the cylinder block.

The chart that follows has a list of the Special Instructions, shims and inserts that are currently available for 5 3/4" bore and 6 1/4" bore engines.
