Correct Lubrication Procedure Will Prevent Damage To Fan Drive

Usage:

3406 (90U),
3408 (67U),
3412 (38S) And D353 (46B2437-Up) Industrial Engines

There have been reports from the field of fan drive failures on D353 Industrial Engines. Some of the fan drive groups have a grease fitting, through which grease can be added, and a pressure relief fitting. Other fan drive groups have only a grease fitting. Illustrations 1 and 2 show two typical fan drives.

Illustration 1. Typical location of fittings on D353 Industrial Engine fan drives equipped with pressure relief and grease fittings.

There are indications that on some fan drive groups a replacement of the pressure relief fitting was made with a grease fitting. This can cause an increase in pressure in the fan drive during engine operation and result in fan drive failure. The pressure relief fitting and the grease fitting have different designs and are not replacements for each other. See Illustration 3.

The Operation and Maintenance Guide for D353 Industrial Engines, Form SEBU5364-01, Page G-3, topic "Lubricating Fan Drive", shows the wrong location for the fitting. See Illustrations 1 and 2 for correct locations of the fittings.

Also, the Operation and Maintenance Guides for 3400 Series Industrial Engines show the location of the grease fitting for fan drive groups equipped with a grease fitting only. See Illustration 4. Make reference to Illustration 5 for location of both fittings on fan drives so equipped. This information can be added to the Operation and Maintenance Guide for your engine as shown in the chart.

Make reference to the guide for your engine for the correct service interval for fan drive bearings.
