Gasket Kits

Usage:

Gasket kits are convenient items to have in a service shop. They eliminate part number research time, reduce clerical work, and lessen the chance for assembly errors. But, in some cases, service personnel are disappointed, either because certain gaskets were not included or several gaskets were left over in the kit after repairs. To avoid this, Caterpillar urges everyone to understand the consist list of each gasket kit before it is ordered. This is necessary to determine what each kit contains. This information is covered on the first few frames of the microfiche entitled Gasket Kit Usage Information. See Illustration 1. This fiche is presently updated every 60 days and included as part of the NPR library. Future updates will not be a part of the NPR library but instead will be sent with the Parts Book microfiche library.

Gasket kit part numbers are listed on the microfiche according to engine model, engine arrangement and serial number. The different engine models are listed in order from smallest to largest (1100 Series appears first; D300 Series appears last). For each engine model, there are four sections which classify gasket kit part numbers by their location on the engine. You must know the engine model, arrangement number and serial number to obtain the part number of the needed gasket kit.

Illustration 1. The Gasket Kit Usage Information fiche cross-references the kit part number to the engine model, engine arrangement number, and engine serial number.

First, locate the engine model on the microfiche. Next, check the location classification which lists the part number of the correct gasket kit. Then match the engine arrangement and serial number to the column containing the kit part number. See Illustration 2.

A complete engine overhaul requires four basic kits - upper, central and lower, front, and rear structures - plus individual kits for accessory components. Smaller repairs need specific kits only.

The following list shows where the kits are used in the engine, kits currently available, and what each kit contains.

Upper Structure

1. AFTERCOOLER AND LINES GASKET KIT - gaskets and seals needed to fit the aftercooler. Kit also has gaskets and seals needed for the attaching lines.
2. CYLINDER HEAD KIT - gaskets, O-rings, seals and locks required to assemble an engine from the top of the cylinder block up. Kit does not include gaskets for installation of repair of attached components or any precombustion chamber gaskets or shims.
3. TURBOCHARGER MOUNTING GASKET KIT - air line gaskets, seals, turbocharger mounting gaskets and seals, and exhaust by-pass gaskets and seals. The kit does not include internal turbocharger gaskets and seals.
4. WATER COOLED MANIFOLD AND DRY MANIFOLD GASKET KITS - gaskets and seals for manifold engines.

If enough parts are needed a separate kit will be made for engine manifolds and the kit part numbers will appear in the manifold kit columns. If not, the necessary gaskets and seals will be included in the complete cylinder head kit.

Central And Lower, Front And Rear Structures And Fuel System

1. CYLINDER BLOCK/OIL PAN GASKET KIT - gaskets, O-rings, seals and locks needed to assemble an engine from the top deck of the cylinder block down. Gaskets needed for repair and installation of the oil pump are included. Oil pan and side cover gaskets are a part of this kit. An oil filter will be in this kit if it is offered. If an oil cooler and lines gasket kit is available, the oil filter will be found in it instead.
2. SINGLE CYLINDER LINER KIT - bands and seals to replace one cylinder liner.
3. FRONT COVER AND HOUSING GASKET KIT - gaskets, O-rings, seals and locks to assemble the front cover and mount to the front face of the cylinder block. The kit contains fan drive seals when they are built into the front housing. The Front Cover and Housing Gasket Kit also contains the front shaft seal, accessory mounting gaskets, cover plate gaskets, and gaskets and seals for accessory and auxiliary drives.
4. OIL PUMP - If enough parts are needed a separate kit will be offered. If not, order the cylinder block and oil pan gasket kit. Oil filters will also be included in the cylinder block and oil pan gasket kit.
5. REAR COVER AND HOUSING GASKET KIT - Gaskets, O-rings, seals, and locks needed to assemble the rear cover and install it to the rear face of the cylinder block. The kit has locks for the flywheel and a crankshaft rear seal, and gaskets and seals for the auxiliary drives. Transmission and torque converter mounting gaskets are not included.

6. SCROLL AND SLEEVE METERING FUEL SYSTEM GASKET KITS - gaskets, O-rings and metal locks to repair and assemble the fuel injection pump and governor, fuel transfer pump, governor torque spring and fuel ratio control, fuel priming pump, fuel pump and governor drive groups.

Water Pump, Oil Cooler, And Oil Lines

1. ENGINE, BRAKE, TRANSMISSION, AND TORQUE CONVERTER OIL COOLER GASKET KITS - gaskets and seals to assemble and mount the oil cooler. If the engine oil cooler needs many parts, a separate kit will be made. If not, these options are available; if the water pump is removed and oil cooler remains attached to the engine, order the Water Pump Gasket Kit instead. If only the oil cooler is removed, gaskets and seals needed will be in the Oil Lines Gasket Kit or the Oil Cooler Gasket Kit. When the transmission and torque converter oil cooler is attached to the engine oil cooler and removed as one unit, gaskets and seals will be in the Engine Oil Cooler Gasket Kit.
2. OIL LINES GASKET KIT - Gaskets and seals to install the oil cooling group. This kit will be offered only if enough parts are needed. If a separate kit is not offered, oil line gaskets will be in the engine and transmission oil cooler groups.
3. STANDARD, RAW, OR AFTERCOOLER WATER PUMP GASKET KITS - gaskets, and seals to assemble a water pump and to attach water lines for water pump installation. Oil cooler seals will be included in this kit when they are attached to the water pump.
4. WATER PUMP GROUP AND WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY - water pump groups can be serviced, but if they are not, order the water pump assembly instead. This kit will include parts for the water pump gasket kit and water pump rebuild kit plus a housing. The water pump group and water pump assembly are completely assembled units and can be installed immediately.
5. WATER PUMP REBUILD KIT - bearings, shaft, and internal seals required to repair the water pump. Impeller is not included.

Water Lines, Expansion Tank/Heat Exchanger, Air Compressor, BrakeSaver Control Cooler And Lines, Front/Rear Take-Off

1. AIR COMPRESSOR KIT - gaskets, seals and O-rings for the air compressor and air compressor drive.
2. BRAKESAVER: BRAKESAVER CONTROL, COOLER, AND LINES KIT - internal gaskets and seals to assemble and mount the BrakeSaver oil cooler.
3. EXPANSION TANK/HEAT EXCHANGER GASKET KIT - gaskets, seals and O-rings to assemble and mount the expansion tank.
4. FRONT AND REAR POWER TAKE-OFF GASKET KIT - gaskets, O-rings, seals and locks to install front or rear power take-off groups.
5. WATER LINES GASKET KIT - gaskets, O-rings, seals and locks to install a new or exchange water pump.
