Procedure To Stop Lubricant Leakage From Flexible Couplings

Usage:

D379, D398 And D399 Industrial, Marine And Generator Set Engines

When lubricant leaks from the flexible couplings used on the above engines, most servicemen just add more lubricant. Most of the time, this repair only increases the rate of leakage.

The reason for the increased leakage is too much lubricant in the coupling. All old lubricant must be cleaned out of the coupling before new lubricant is added.

Use the procedure that follows.

1. Clean and inspect all of the seals in the flexible coupling. Install replacements for any damaged seals.

2. Thoroughly clean all of the flexible coupling components.

3. Put some 4L7464 Silicone Grease on the teeth and bore of the outer (drive) coupling.

4. Install the boots.

5. Put some silicone grease on the teeth and inside diameters of the boots.

6. Install the inner (driven) coupling.

7. Put the remainder of the 679 g (24 ounces) of silicone grease in the bore of the inner coupling.

8. Install the seal and the plate.
