All Caterpillar Products
All Caterpillar batteries now use vent caps that have a flame barrier or similar design. These vent caps are designed to prevent the flashback of gases that could be ignited outside the battery from reaching the gases inside the battery and causing an explosion. These caps will decrease the chance of an explosion caused by an external spark or flame. Because of the design of these vent caps, it is Caterpillar's recommendation to NOT remove the vent caps when the battery is being charged or boost started.
To boost start a machine always connect the positive boost cable to positive (+) terminal of the battery that is directly connected to the positive (+) terminal of the starter. Connect the negative (-) boost cable to negative (-) terminal of the starter or to the starter terminal of the disconnect switch, if so equipped. Disconnect the boost cables in reverse sequence of connection. For a more complete procedure see the Operation (Operator's) Guide for your Caterpillar product.
