Inspection Of Oil Filters When Bearing Problems Are Found

Usage:

1100, 3100 Series Engines;
3208 Engines

If you have problems with the main or connecting rod bearings in 1100 or 3100 Series or 3208 Engines, be sure to keep the oil filters used at time of failure. Filters from remanufactured engines are also needed.

Careful examination of the filters is helpful in determining the cause of bearing failures. The filters often show evidence of what caused the failure, i.e. engine maintenance, filter quality, debris, water, fuel dilution, and bypass opening pressure on filters so equipped.

As soon as possible after a bearing failure is encountered, cut open the filters with the 5P1747 Tool Group. Thoroughly inspect the element and make a determination of the following items:

... Condition of seal and end plate.
... Condition of filter medium (blocked, cracked).
... Condition of bypass valve (stuck open?)
... Type of debris collected in the filter can.
