6V6142 And 6V6143 Installers Must Be Used To Install Crankshaft Seals And Wear Sleeves

Usage:

3406 Truck Engines

An article by this same title was published in Truck Engine News, December 8, 1982. Put a mark through that article and make reference to this article. Some of the information in the earlier article was not correct and new information is now available.

The new 6V6142 (front) and 6V6143 (rear) Installers must be used to install the new 2W1733 and 2W1734 Crankshaft Seal Groups. Because different seal groups are now used for the front and rear of the crankshaft, both tools will be needed. The new installers will make it possible to install both the seal and wear sleeve to the correct location at the same time. This is important because the seals and wear sleeves must not be separated from each other at any time.

If desired, modification can be made to the existing 6V2087 Seal Installer so that it can be used to install the new crankshaft seals. If the modification is made to the 6V2087 Installer make sure the two counterbores are machined correctly. Two of the 6V2087 Installers are needed to make a complete set of installers for the new seals (one for the front, one for the rear).

NOTE: The 6V2087 Seal Installers are still needed for earlier 3406 Engines and for all 3408 Engines. If modifications are made to the 6V2087 Installers it can no longer be used to install the 7N1999 Crankshaft Seal Group.

One 6V2087 Seal Installer can be machined to the dimensions in Illustration 1 so that it can be used to install the 2W1733 Crankshaft Seal Group (Front). When the modifications have been made, the 6V2087 part number must be removed. Put the new part number "6V6142 (Front)" on the tool.

A 6V6143 Installer (Rear) can be made when a 6V2087 Installer is machined to the dimensions in Illustration 2. When the modifications have been made, the 6V2087 part number must be removed. Put "6V6143 (Rear)" on the tool. This new tool can now be used to install 2W1734 Seal Groups.

The installation of these new seal groups is similar to that for the earlier crankshaft seal and wear sleeve groups as shown in Special Instruction, Form SMHS7100. Special Instruction, Form SMHS8008, which is sent with each new seal group, has the special handling and installation information for these new seal groups.
