The new group has a thicker top ring with a layer of plasma on the outside diameter. The in effect serial number was not given in this article. The in effect serial number is 28V4544-Up. Reference: Truck Engine News, June 23, 1982, Page 10. The article " New Piston Group Has A Thicker Top Ring," tells about the use of a new piston group in 3406 Truck Engines. The new group has a thicker top piston ring with a layer of plasma on the outside diameter. These changes make the ring stronger and give better resistance to scuffing.
The new design piston and thicker top piston ring can also be used for parts service on 3408 Truck Engines. The new parts, when used together, are direct replacements for the production parts as shown in the chart. The production rings and pistons can still be used for parts service, if desired.
