Oil Passage Plugs Are No Longer Installed In Crankshafts For Parts Service

Usage:

1673 Truck Engines

A change has been made to several crankshaft assemblies used in the above engines. During assembly of the crankshafts for parts service, the pipe plugs will no longer be installed in the oil passages. The plugs will be put in a plastic bag (package), and sent with the crankshaft. This will make it easier to inspect and, if necessary, clean the oil passages before the crankshaft is installed in the engine. It is very important that the oil passage be carefully inspected and thoroughly cleaned before crankshaft installation to prevent engine damage.

This change makes it necessary for the serviceman to install the 9F2247 Pipe Plugs in the crankshaft. Information about procedures for removal and installation of these oil passage plugs is given in Form SEBD0531, "Engine Bearings And Crankshafts", and in the "Guideline For Reusable Parts Visual Inspection Of Crankshafts ", Form SEBF8043. The plugs must be tightened to a torque of 23 ± 4 N·m (17 ± 3 lb ft), and "staked" with a punch to keep them tight.

The first crankshafts to be released for parts service shipment without the pipe plugs installed are the 6N7899, 9M2337, 8M4505, 6N8324, 6N7900, and 6N8337 Crankshaft Assemblies.
