SUPPLEMENT: 04/13/83

TRUCK ENGINE NEWS, MAY 19, 1982, PAGE 6. In the article, "Conversion Of 49-State 3406 Truck Engines From 283 kW (380 hp) To 298 kW (400 hp) Arrangements, ", an addition to a chart is necessary. Add the information which follows to the "Parts For Conversion" chart.

--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------

Dealers want to know if conversion of a 3406 Truck Engine from a 283 kw (380 hp) arrangement to a 298 kw (400 hp) arrangement is possible. This conversion can be made only to EPA-approved, 49-state engine arrangements; however, the CARB has not approved any 298 kW (400 hp) arrangements, thus, the conversion can not be made to CARB-approved arrangements.

Two conversion procedures are given. The first procedure is used for engines with Serial Numbers 92U28617 and up, except for CARB-approved arrangements and for the 1W9706 Arrangement. The second procedure is used for conversion of the 1W9706 Arrangement, a 298 kW (400 hp) engine derated to 283 kW (380 hp), back to a 298 kW (400 hp) engine.

The complete conversion to the new arrangement must be made. The Clean Air Act prohibits the removal of or rendering inoperative of any emission control device or element of design installed on or in a motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine. A civil penalty of up to $10,000 may be imposed per infraction upon conviction.

Conversion Of Engines Except Carb-approved Arrangements And 1W9706 Arrangement

1. Install the new parts shown in the chart.

2. Adjust the fuel controls to the settings shown in the chart.

3. Adjust the timing as shown in the chart.

4. Remove the "9N3728" from on top of the fuel injection pump housing, and use a stamp to mark the housing with "9N6599".

5. Remove the Engine Exhaust Emission Control Information film and throw it away.

6. Contact a Product Analyst in Service Engineering to get a new film. (U.S. and Canadian dealers call Telephone No. 309-675-4065 or 309-578-8147. Subsidiaries contact their service groups.) The Product Analyst will need the engine serial number and the old and new arrangement numbers. Install the film.

7. Use a stamp to mark the engine identification plate with the new engine arrangement number, rack setting and high idle information.

8. Make a service report, and send a copy to Caterpillar Tractor Co.

Conversion Of Engines Built To 1W9706 Arrangement

Since this engine is a 298 kW (400 hp) Engine that has been derated to 283 kW (380 hp), the serviceman needs to change only the rack setting, the high idle setting and the torque control group.

1. Change the group as shown in the chart.

2. Adjust the fuel control to the settings as shown in the chart.

3. Use a stamp to mark the engine identification plate with the new engine arrangement number, rack setting and high idle.

4. Make a service report, and send a copy to Caterpillar Tractor Co.

The complete conversion to the new arrangement must be made. The Clean Air Act prohibits the removal of or rendering inoperative of any emission control device or element of design installed on or in a motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine. A civil penalty of up to $10,000 may be imposed upon conviction.
