Check Bottom Surface Of Cylinder Liner Flange For Erosion And Wear

Usage:

All 3406 And 3408 Truck Engines

During reconditioning of any 3406 or 3408 Truck Engine, the serviceman is expected to inspect the cylinder liners to find if they can be used again.

It is especially important for the serviceman to inspect the bottom surface of the flange on the cylinder liner. Because this surface also makes contact with the block, the same type of erosion that can be found on the face of the cylinder block can be found under the liner flange.

Erosion and wear can cause a loss of material from the flange. If erosion and wear is found on the flange, carefully remove the debris. Then, use a micrometer to measure the thickness of the flange in the area of erosion and wear around the flange.

If the thickness of the flange is not in the specifications given in the "Specifications" section of the appropriate Service Manual, DO NOT use the cylinder liner again.

If too much material is gone from the flange: (a) the flange will not give a good seal between the liner and the block, and (b) the flange will not give enough support to the fire ring in the head gasket.
