Usage:
3208 Truck Engines (40S32Y)
Description of Change:
In the U.S.A., a new EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) regulation (rule) is in effect for noise emissions on refuse compaction trucks. The Federal Register, October 1,1979, (44 FR 56524-56546) shows the EPA noise emission standards for refuse compaction trucks during the compaction cycle as follows:
To keep the maximum noise levels at or below these standards, most operators who use these trucks will use settings of 1000-1200 RPM for the compaction cycle.
A new governor spring is available for 3208 Engines used in refuse compaction trucks. The new spring permits a load of up to 37.285 kW (50 HP) on the engine with no more than 100 RPM change from 1200 RPM. With this spring, the operator can add a governor control system which will give the necessary degree of engine control for the new regulation standard. Adjustment of the high idle rpm must not be changed from the original specifications.
Adaptable To: The new 1W4793 Governor Spring (High Idle) is directly adaptable to 3208 Truck Engines 40S1-up and 32Y1-up. A Special Instruction, Form SMHS7837 is sent with each spring for parts service. The new spring is available only as a parts service item, and will not be installed at the factory.
