The current specifications to check the valve cam timing on 3406B Engines are accurate, but may be difficult to measure in the field. The following factory procedures compliment the steps provided in the Service Manual.
Factory Procedure for Checking Correct Cam and Correct Cam Timing
1. Set the No. 3 intake bridge adjustment.
2. Set the No. 3 intake valve clearance.
3. Install the pin in the flywheel with No. 1 piston at top dead center, firing.
4. Install the dial indicator (magnetic base) to No. 3 intake bridge.
5. Set the gauge at zero and rotate the engine in the normal direction of operation (counter-clockwise from the rear) until dial travel stops.
The chart illustrates correct settings.
