The function of the air compressor is to provide and maintain air under pressure to operate devices in the air brake and/or auxiliary air systems.
The 1W150R Air Compressor is a single cylinder, single stage air compressor with a rated displacement of 5 cubic feet per minute at 1000 rpm. It has been designed for fitting to the engines of light and medium weight commercial vehicles. It uses balanced crankshafts and reed type air inlet and delivery valves for greater efficiency and reliability at high operating speeds.
The air compressor is flange mounted and driven through gears from the engine. The crankcase and cylinder barrel form a single rigid casting. The cylinder barrel is air cooled but the cylinder head is water cooled. The cooling water is circulated from the engine's cooling system. This air compressor may be run in either direction of rotation at speeds of up to 3000 rpm to deliver up to 1100 kPa (160 psi).
The air compressor is available in through and non-through drive versions. On through drive machines SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) or DIN (Deutshe Industrie Norm) mounting flanges can be provided at the through drive end for fitting power steering hydraulic pumps.
An unloader mechanism is incorporated in the cylinder head. This mechanism is controlled by a separately mounted D2 Governor valve which responds to variations of air pressure in the vehicle braking system reservoirs. The air inlet and delivery valves are fitted in a valve plate mounted between the cylinder head and cylinder barrel. The air compressor lubricating oil is circulated under pressure from the engine's lubricating system.
