Pistons

Usage:

Remove Pistons

start by:

a) remove cylinder head assembly

b) remove oil pan plate

1. Remove the carbon from the top inside surface of cylinder liners.

2. Turn the crankshaft until two pistons are at bottom dead center.

3. Remove the connecting rods caps (1) from the two connecting rods that are at bottom dead center.

4. Push the pistons up until the rings clear the top of the cylinder liner.

5. Remove the two pistons.

6. Do steps 1 to 5 again, for the remainder of the pistons.

Install Pistons

1. Put clean oil on the crankshaft bearing journals, cylinder liners, pistons, piston rings, and connecting rod bearings.

2. Put the ring compressor (A) on top of the cylinder liner. Turn the rings on the piston until the gaps are 180° apart. Carefully install the piston through ring compressor into the cylinder liner. The "V" mark on the piston must be in alignment with the "V" on the cylinder block.

NOTICE

To prevent ring breakage, make sure that as the ring compressor starts to engage the ring that the ring takes its seat in the groove.

3. Put clean oil on the threads of the connecting rod cap fastening bolts.

4. Install the connecting rod caps and fastening nuts.

NOTICE

When installing connecting rod cap, be sure that the number marked on side of cap is the same as and is on the same side as the number marked on the side of the connecting rod.

5. Tighten the fastening nuts to 30 ± 3 lb.ft. (4,1 ± 0,4 mkg). Put a mark on the end of each nut and bolt. Tighten the nut 90° from the mark as shown.

6. Do steps 1 to 5 again for the remainder of the pistons.

end by:

a) install oil pan plate

b) install cylinder head assembly

Disassemble Pistons

start by:

a) remove pistons

1. Remove the piston pin retaining rings (2).

2. Remove the piston pin (1) and remove piston from the connecting rod.

3. Remove the piston rings using ring expander (A).

Assemble Pistons

1. Install the piston rings on the piston, using piston ring expander (A).

NOTE: The compression ring has the words "UP" or "TOP" on one side of the ring. These words must be installed toward the top of the piston.

2. Put clean oil on the piston pin.

3. Put the piston into position on the connecting rod, with the "V" mark (2) on the piston and the number (1) on the connecting rod in line with each other.

4. Install the piston pin and retaining rings. Make sure the retaining rings take the correct seat in the piston grooves.

end by:

a) install pistons
