Rear Timing Gears & Plate

Usage:

Remove Rear Timing Gears And Plate

preparatory steps:

a) remove flywheel housing

b) remove valve covers

1. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise (as viewed from rear of engine) to top center compression stroke No. 1 piston. See LOCATING TOP CENTER COMPRESSION POSITION FOR NO. 1 PISTON in TESTING AND ADJUSTING.

2. Install the camshaft timing pins in right and left bank camshaft. Remove fuel injection pump camshaft timing pin from its storage hole, and install pin in timing hole in pump camshaft.

3. Remove oil pump drive idler gear (1) from flywheel housing. Using tool setup (A), remove bearing from idler gear. Remove timing gear thrust washers from flywheel housing. Remove idler gear bearings (2) from housing.

4. Remove water pump drive idler gear (5). Remove cluster gear (4) and thrust washer. Using tool setup (B), remove bearing from cluster gear.

NOTICE

To avoid piston and valve interference, do not rotate the crankshaft with timing gears removed and the camshaft housing installed.

5. Remove variable timing unit cover (3). Remove timing gear plate retaining bolts and locks. Remove plate (6)-weight 40 lb. (18 kg).

6. Remove water pump drive idler gear thrust washer and bearing from plate.

7. Remove oil line (9). Remove camshaft drive idler gear (7), retaining bolts, lock, and shaft (8). Using tool setup (C), remove bearing from camshaft drive idler gear.

Install Rear Timing Gears And Plate

NOTICE

To avoid piston and valve interference, do not rotate the crankshaft with timing gears removed and the camshaft housings installed.

1. Using tool setup (C), install the bearing in camshaft drive idler gear. Position the gear and shaft (1) on engine, and install retaining bolts and lock. Install the oil line.

NOTE: Lubricate all bearings with clean SAE 30 engine oil after installation.

2. Install the water pump drive idler gear bearing in timing gear plate using tool setup (D). Install the thrust washer on plate.

3. Install a new timing gear plate-to-cylinder block gasket. Position the timing gear plate (2) on engine, and install retaining bolts and locks. Trim the gasket flush with oil pan face of cylinder block. Install the variable timing unit cover.

4. Using tool setup (B), install the bearing in cluster gear. Install cluster gear on engine with "V" mark on cluster gear aligned with "V" mark on crankshaft gear.

NOTICE

Always be sure that the No. 1 piston is at top center compression stroke, and the timing pins are installed in timing slots in left and right camshafts and the fuel injection pump camshaft before installing the cluster gear. Damage to the engine can result if above procedure is not followed.

5. Install the water pump drive idler gear.

6. Using tool setup (D), install idler gear bearings in flywheel housing. Install thrust washers on housing.

7. Using tool setup (A), install bearing in oil pump drive idler gear. Position gear on flywheel housing. Install retaining bolts, lock, and washer.

8. Remove all timing pins from their timing slots. Install pins in their respective storage positions.

concluding steps:

a) install flywheel housing

b) check fuel injection pump camshaft timing as outlined in TESTING AND ADJUSTING

c) install valve covers
