Piston Cooling Tubes

Usage:

Remove Piston Cooling Tubes

preparatory steps:

a) remove starters (left bank only)

b) remove engine oil cooler (right bank only)

1. To remove tubes on left bank only, drain oil filter housing. Remove the prelube pump oil inlet line (5) retaining bolts (4). Remove clamp retaining bolt (1). Disconnect wiring harness from switch (2). Mark wiring for identification when installing.

2. Attach a hoist to pump motor and remove mounting bolts (3). Remove prelube pump and motor assembly-weight 105 lbs. (48 kg).

3. On Industrial engines only, remove the fumes disposal tube (6).

4. Disconnect oil sensing line (11) from turbocharger lubrication manifold. Remove the prelube pump motor mounting plate (8). Remove the wiring harness retaining clamps (9), then lay the wiring harness and mounting plates (7) and (12) aside.

5. Remove the inspection covers (10).

6. To remove tubes on the right bank only, remove the engine oil cooler oil inlet elbow (13). Remove the engine right inspection covers (14).

7. Bend the locks and remove the tube mounting bolts (15). Remove the piston cooling tube.

Install Piston Cooling Tubes

1. Position the piston cooling tube (1) on the cylinder block. Make sure the body of the cooling tube seats flat on the cylinder block. If cooling tube is not seated properly, it will cause a lack of cooling oil to reach the piston. Install the retaining bolt and lock.

NOTICE

Never install a bent or damaged cooling tube. Damage to the engine may result.

2. Tighten retaining bolt to 35 ± 5 lb.ft. (4.8 ± 0.7 mkg) and bend the lock. If the 4N8986 Cooling Tubes are used, check the clearance between each piston and cooling tube with a piece of .025 in. (0.36 mm) wire. 4N8986 Cooling Tubes are adaptable to machines 61P1-UP and 62P1-UP and must be used with machines that have connecting rods marked even cylinder only and odd cylinder only.

3. Install the engine right inspection covers. Install the engine oil cooler oil inlet elbow.

4. Install the engine left inspection covers. Position the wiring harness and mounting plates onto covers with mounting bolts. Install the prelube pump motor mounting plate. Install the remaining cover mounting bolts.

5. Attach a hoist, position the prelube oil pump and motor assembly on engine and install mounting bolts.

6. Connect wiring harness to pump motor. Connect pump oil outlet line. Install clamp retaining bolts.

7. Connect the oil sensing line to the turbocharger lubrication manifold.

8. On Industrial engines, install fumes disposal tube.

9. Check the oil level in the engine crankcase.

concluding steps:

a) install starters (left bank only)

b) install engine oil cooler (right bank only)
