D349 INDUSTRIAL & MARINE ENGINES Caterpillar

Connecting Rod Bearings

Usage:

Remove And Install Connecting Rod Bearings

preparatory steps:

a) remove starters

b) remove engine oil cooler

c) remove jacket water pump

1. Remove prelube pump oil inlet line retaining bolts (5). Remove clamp retaining bolt (1). Disconnect prelube pump oil outlet line (4). Remove cover (2), and disconnect wiring harness. Mark wiring for identification at installation.

2. Attach hoist, and remove mounting bolts (3). Remove prelube oil pump and motor assembly-weight 105 lbs. (48 kg).

3. Disconnect oil sensing line (11) from turbocharger lubrication manifold. Remove the wiring harness retaining clamps (9) and plates (7) and (12) from inspection covers. Lay the wiring harness aside. Remove the prelube pump motor mounting plate (8).

4. On Industrial engines only, remove the fumes disposal tube (6).

5. Remove the remaining inspection cover mounting bolts, and remove the engine left inspection covers (10).

6. Remove the engine oil cooler oil inlet elbow (13).

7. Remove engine right inspection covers (14).

8. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from the front of engine) until connecting rod caps (15) are in position shown.

9. Remove the connecting rod caps and retaining bolts.

NOTE: Remove the No. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 connecting rod caps through right side of cylinder block. Remove the No. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 connecting rod caps through left side of cylinder block.

10. Remove lower half of bearings from caps.

11. Push the connecting rods away from crankshaft, and remove upper half of bearings.

NOTE: Engines 61P1 - 61P570 and 62P1 - 62P317 have connecting rods that use bearings with tabs. Engines 61P571-UP and 62P318-UP have connecting rods marked even cylinder only and odd cylinder only and have bearings without tabs. The bearings are kept from turning in the connecting rod by dowels in the connecting rod and cap. The connecting rods marked even cylinder only are used in the left side of the engine as seen from the flywheel. The connecting rods marked odd cylinder only are used in the right side of the engine as seen from the flywheel.

12. Install upper half of new connecting rod bearings in connecting rods. Lubricate the bearings and crankshaft journal with clean SAE 30 engine oil. Pull the connecting rods into position on crankshaft.

13. Install lower half of new bearings in caps. Lubricate bearings with clean SAE 30 engine oil.

14. Lubricate the threads of retaining bolts with 9M3710 Anti-Seize Compound.

15. Position the connecting rod caps and install retaining bolts. Tighten both bolts initially to 90 ± 5 lb. ft. (12,4 ± 0,7 mkg) and mark end of bolt and rod cap. Tighten each bolt an additional 120° ± 5° from mark after initial tightening.

16. Repeat steps 9 through 16 for remaining bearings.

17. Install engine right inspection covers. Install oil cooler oil inlet elbow.

18. Install engine left inspection covers. Install wiring harness assembly clamps and plate retaining bolts. Install prelube pump motor mounting plate. Connect oil pressure sensing line to turbocharger lubrication manifold.

19. Attach hoist and install prelube oil pump, motor assembly and mounting bolts. Install oil outlet line clamp bolt, and connect oil outlet line. Install oil inlet line mounting bolts. Connect prelube oil pump motor wiring harness and install relay cover.

concluding steps:

a) install starters

b) install engine oil cooler

c) install water pump
