Pistons

Usage:

Remove Pistons

preparatory steps:

a) remove cylinder head assembly

b) remove oil filter base

c) remove engine cooler

1. Remove the oil level gauge and gauge tube (2).

2. Remove the fuel oil drain lines (1).

3. Remove the exhaust manifold water supply line and oil cooler water outlet elbow (Marine engine only).

4. Remove the cylinder block inspection plate (3).

5. Clean the carbon ridge from the top of the cylinder liners.

6. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from the front of the engine) as necessary to gain access to the connecting rod cap (4).

7. Remove the connecting rod caps and retaining bolts.

8. Push the piston upward until the rings clear the cylinder liner. Lift the piston and connecting rod from the liner.

9. Repeat steps 4 through 6 for the remaining pistons.

Install Pistons

1. Lubricate the piston, rings, connecting rod bearings, and cylinder walls with clean SAE 30 engine oil.

2. Using compressor (A) install the piston so that the "V" mark on the piston is aligned with the "V" mark on the spacer plate.

3. Install the connecting rod bearing, cap and bolts. Lubricate the bolts, thread with clean SAE 30 engine oil. Tighten both nuts initially to 50 ± 5 lb. ft. (6,9 ± 0,7 mkg) plus 180° ± 10° additional turn.

NOTE: When installing the connecting rod caps the numbered surfaces must mate.

4. Install the cylinder block inspection plate.

5. Install the oil cooler water outlet elbow and exhaust manifold water supply line (Marine engine only).

6. Install the fuel oil drain lines.

7. Install the oil level gauge and gauge tube.

concluding steps:

a) install the cylinder head assembly

b) install the oil filter base

c) install the engine oil cooler

Disassemble Piston

preparatory step:

a) remove pistons

1. Remove piston pin retaining rings (2).

2. Remove piston pin (1) and remove piston from the connecting rod.

3. Remove the piston rings using ring expander (A).

Assemble Piston

1. Using ring expander (A), install the piston rings.

NOTE: The two compression rings are marked "UP-1" and "UP-2". The rings must be installed with these marks toward the top of the piston with "UP-1" being the top ring. After all three rings have been installed on piston, stagger the ring gaps 120° apart.

2. Lubricate the piston pin with clean SAE 30 engine oil. Position the piston on the connecting rod with the "V" mark (2) on the piston and number (1) on the connecting rod on the same side. Install the piston pin and retaining rings. Make certain the retaining rings are seated in their grooves.

concluding step:

a) install pistons
