Planetary Gear Section

Usage:

Planetary Gear Section Removal

The planetary section can be removed from the marine gear housing without disconnecting the marine gear from the engine. If it is necessary to remove the planetary sun gear drive shaft, the top shaft must be removed from the housing.

1. Match mark the propeller drive flange (4) and the mating flange and remove propeller flange (4).

2. Remove oil pump (1) and filter assembly (3).

3. Disconnect oil hose (2) from the control valve and remove oil manifold (5) and the control valve as a unit.

4. Install a lifting eye in the tapped hole in the top of the housing. Remove all of the retaining bolts and use two forcing screws in holes (6) to separate the planetary gear section from the main housing. The planetary gear section weighs approximately 1250 lbs. (567 kg).

DRIVE SHAFT REMOVAL
11. Retainer. 12. Drive shaft.

5. Remove the bolts, lock and ring (8) from the drive shaft and remove planetary drive sun gear (7). The gear is not a press fit on the splined shaft. There is a spacer behind the gear.

If it is necessary to remove the planetary sun gear drive shaft the complete clutch and top shaft assembly must be removed. See the topic, TOP SHAFT REMOVAL.

6. After the top shaft is removed, remove oil tube (9) and bracket (10). The short oil tube may be in either the bracket or the end of drive shaft (12).

7. Remove the bolts, lock and retainer (11) from drive shaft (12).

8. Remove the drive shaft (12) through the planet section opening in the housing.

DRIVE SHAFT REMOVED
7. Planetary drive sun gear. 12. Drive shaft.

Planetary Gear Section Installation

1. Install drive shaft (12) in the lower shaft. Tighten and lock the bolts through retainer (11).

2. Insert the short oil tube in the end of drive shaft (12) and install bracket (10) and oil tube (9).

3. Install the spacer and sun gear (7) on drive shaft (12) and tighten and lock the bolts through ring (8).

4. Thoroughly clean and dry the planetary gear section-to-housing mounting surfaces. Apply 7M7260 Gasket Material on the clean dry surface and install the planetary gear section.

5. 7M7260 Gasket Material is used when installing oil manifold (5) and oil pump (1). Make certain the piston ring-type seals, on the oil pump drive end of the top shaft, are not broken when installing the oil manifold. Install filter assembly (3) and connect oil hose (2).

6. Install propeller drive flange (4) by aligning the match marks on the two flanges and installing the bolts and nuts.

*Use these tools if the tapped holes (5) in carrier assembly (4) are "-18 NF thread.

1. Remove the six bolts, lock, washer and gasket from the end of carrier assembly shaft (1) and lift the flange off the shaft.

REMOVING FLANGE

2. Remove the retaining bolts from bearing retainer (2) and use two forcing screws to separate it from cover assembly (3).

BEARING REMOVAL RETAINER
1. Carrier assembly shaft. 2. Bearing retainer. 3. Cover assembly.

3. Place cover assembly (3), with carrier assembly shaft (1) down, on blocks. Install three short FT867 Rods in the three tapped holes, 8.75 in. (222.3 mm) diameter hole circle, in FT866 Backup Plate. The three legs, in the backup plate, will fit through holes in carrier assembly (4) and rest against a cone of the thrust bearing assembly.

4. Install 1H3108 Legs in tapped holes (5) in carrier assembly (4) and assemble the 1H3107 Push Puller, 5H9817 Hydraulic Puller and a step plate over the backup plate. Force the thrust bearing assembly from cover assembly (3). It will be necessary to change the short FT867 Rods to longer rods as the bearing assembly moves out of the cover assembly.

NOTE: If tapped holes (5) in carrier assembly (4) are 5/8"-18 NF thread, the 8B7549 Legs, 8B7548 Push Puller and the 1P820 Hydraulic Puller are used to force the thrust bearing assembly from the cover assembly.

5. Remove carrier assembly (4) from cover assembly (3). Remove the two bolts and lock (6) from shaft (7). Use two forcing screws to remove shaft (7) from the carrier assembly.

4. Carrier assembly. 6. Bolts and lock. 7. Shaft.

6. Remove the planet gear, roller bearings and thrust washers.

PLANET GEAR REMOVED

7. The ring gear separates from cover assembly (3) after thirty bolts (8), lock (9) and fourteen locks (10) are removed.

RING GEAR AND COVER
3. Cover assembly. 8. Bolts (thirty). 9. Lock. 10. Lock (fourteen).

Planetary Gear Section Assembly

1. Install the ring gear on cover assembly (3). The spacing of the gear retaining bolt holes prevents the gear from being installed incorrectly.

2. Insert the roller bearings in the planet gear, the thrust washers on each side of the planet gear hub and install the gear and shaft (7) in carrier assembly (4). Two bolts are used to force shaft (7) into the carrier assembly.

3. Place carrier assembly (4) on blocks with carrier shaft (1) up. Place cover assembly (3) over carrier assembly (4).

4. The thrust bearing cones and cups are numbered. Keep the cone and cup with corresponding numbers together. Heat the bearing cones in oil, temperature not to exceed 175° F (135° C), to facilitate installation. Install bearing cone in cover assembly (3), over shaft (1), with the large diameter of the cone toward the planet gears. Install the bearing cup, with the number which corresponds to the number on the cup spacer and the other bearing cup, with the small bore face toward the planet gears. Install the last bearing cone with small diameter toward the planet gears.

5. Install bearing retainer (2). Alternately, tighten the bearing retainer bolts evenly to assure equal pressure on the thrust bearings.
