Astern And Ahead Clutches

Usage:

Disassembly

1. Remove the clutch and upper shaft as a unit and mount it on FT996 Positioning Group, FT957 Legs and IP2420 Transmission Repair Stand.

2. Use the two FT840 Brackets to hold the clutch outer components from shifting in relation to the inner components. The ahead drive gear (2) supports the clutch outer portion through the FT840 Brackets.


PREPARING TO REMOVE CLUTCHES FROM CLUTCH SHAFTS
1-Bearing retainer bolts (six), locks (three). 2-Ahead drive gear.

3. Remove all but two of the bearing retainer bolts (1) leaving the remaining two accessible to a wrench.

3-Stud nut 4-FT840 Brackets (two). 5-Clutch spider.

4. With the two FT840 Brackets (4) supporting the clutch assembly, remove stud nuts (3) and the remaining two retainer bolts (1).

5. Remove the clutch spider (5) being careful not to damage the clutch studs.

NOTE: If the old plates are to be reused, mark the clutch plates so they can be assembled in the same order.

6. Remove the ahead clutch drive rings (9) and the ahead clutch plates in the same manner as the astern clutch.

7. Inspect the ahead and astern clutch plates and replace if worn or damaged. The clutch plates are installed alternately, beginning with a sintered bronze plate.

8. Remove the bolts securing the FT840 Brackets to the drive assembly and remove the plate assembly.

9. After removing retainer rings (11), turn the piston assembly over and lift the astern piston (13) out. Follow the same procedure when removing ahead piston (12).

Ahead and Astern Clutches Assembly

1. Place cylinder (8) over the ahead piston (12). Place the springs (18) and washers (19) over the cylinder pins. Compress the springs and washers and install retainer rings (17).

2. Place springs (14) and washers (15) in piston (12), under the holes in cylinder (8). Install astern piston (13) with pins (16) through the holes in cylinder (8), through springs (14) and washers (15). Use the FT841 Spring Clamping Tool to compress the springs to install retainer rings (11).

3. Place plate assembly (10) over the clutch drives and install two FT840 Brackets to position the plate assembly. Install clutch ring (9) on plate assembly (10).

4. If the stacked height of four driven plates (lined) and three drive plates is near the minimum permissible worn dimension [1.716 in. (43,6 mm)], install new driven plates. If the drive plates are scored, install new ones. The plates are alternately placed, a drive plate between each driven plate (lined), in clutch ring (9).

5. Install cylinder assembly (8) and the astern clutch drive ring.

6. If the stacked height of four driven plates (6) and three drive plates (7) is near the minimum permissible worn dimension [1.716 in. (43,6 mm)], install new driven plates. Install new drive plates if they are scored. The plates are alternately placed, a drive plate between each driven plate (lined), in the astern clutch drive ring.

7. Install the oil pump drive shaft and clutch spider. Tighten and lock stud nuts (3) and bearing retainer bolts.
