7261 MARINE GEAR Caterpillar

Upper Shaft And Clutch Installation

Usage:

1. Tighten the bolts in the front retainers (2) so they are flush with the housing. Lock in place. Install the bolts in the rear retainers (1) loosely so bearings can be lowered into place.

NOTE: If the marine gear is attached to the engine, be sure the clutch drive ring is installed on the clutch drive teeth prior to installing the shaft.

INSTALLING UPPER SHAFT AND CLUTCH
1-Bearing rear retainers. 2-Bearing front retainers.

2. Push the outer races of the bearings flush against the bearing front retainers as the shaft is lowered into place.

3. With the hoist still supporting the shaft, install the FT836 Bearing Cap (3) loosely across the ahead drive shaft bearing. This holds all bearings securely in place prior to and during the time the rear retainers are being tightened (bolts) into place.

NOTE: Use extreme care to assure that bearing seats are clean and that the bearing races are completely bottomed prior to tightening the bolts in the bottom halves of the bearing rear retainers.

4. Tighten the FT836 Bearing Cap bolts to a torque of 230±20 lb. ft. (31,8±2,8 kg/cm2). Remove the hoist.

CLAMPING SHAFT IN PLACE WITH THE BEARING CAP
3-FT836 Bearing Cap.

5. Tighten the bolts in the bearing rear retainers and lock in place.

6. If the marine gear is separated from the engine, install blocking to support the front of the shaft before removing the FT836 Bearing Cap. Support the weight of the clutch only because, too much blocking can force the shaft upward.

TIGHTENING LOWER HALF OF REAR RETAINER

BLOCKING THE CLUTCH

NOTE: If the marine gear is attached to the engine, move the clutch drive ring forward and secure it to the flywheel. This will provide support while the bearing cap is being removed.

INSTALLING UPPER HOUSING
4-Rear retainers. 5-Front retainers.

7. Remove the FT836 Bearing Cap and clean both housing parting surfaces with a cleaning solvent. Coat both surfaces with 7M7260 Liquid Gasket Material and allow to "set" for 40 minutes prior to assembly.

8. Install the bearing cap saddles, but do not tighten the bolts at this time.

9. Before installing the upper housing, be sure the bearing front retainers (5) are tight against the housing and locked in place. The bolts in rear retainers (4) should be backed out approximately 1/4 in. (6,4 mm) to facilitate installation.

TIGHTENING BEARING BOLTS

10. Tighten the four saddle bolts in an A-D-B-C sequence.

Initial torque ... 150 lb. ft.(20,7 mkg)

Final torque ... 230 ± 20 lb. ft.(31,8 ± 2,8 mkg)

11. Tighten and lock all of the bolts in the rear bearing retainers.
