Usage:
Flywheel And Ring Gear
Removal and Installation
PREPARING TO REMOVE THE FLYWHEEL
1-Bolts. 2-Cover.
1. Remove the pointer under the cover (2).
2. Remove two bolts (1), from highest and lowest positions and install guide pins (4). For D379 and D398 Engines use 7/8" NF and for D399 Engine use 1" NF guide pins.
3. Remove the remaining bolts, carefully slide the flywheel onto the guide pins and attach a suitable hoist.
4. Remove the flywheel and ring gear (3) from the housing as illustrated. Approximate weight 400 lbs. (181.4 kg).
REMOVING FLYWHEEL
3-Ring gear. 4-Guide pin.
5. Press, cut or burn the ring gear from the flywheel, if replacement is necessary.
6. Before installing a ring gear, clean both the ring gear and the flywheel. Remove all burrs that might interfere with seating the ring gear flush to the flywheel shoulder.
7. Heat the ring gear (not to exceed 600°F) and install it.
NOTE: Electric or air starting replacement ring gear teeth are machined differently than the original equipment ring gear. The replacement gear with blunt teeth can be used for either rotation engines or for either starting system.
With gasoline starting systems, the chamfer on the ring gear teeth must face toward the rear.
8. Align the marks on the flywheel and the crankshaft flange and install the flywheel over the guide pins onto the crankshaft.
9. Remove the guide pins and install the locks and bolts. Tighten the flywheel bolts evenly and diametrically to torque of 560-720 lb. ft. (77,4-99,6 mkg) for D399 Engines and 360-480 lb. ft. (49,8-66,4 mkg) for D379 and D398 Engines.
Checking Flywheel Housing Face Runout
Make tool setup from parts of 8S2328 Dial Test Indicator Group.
CHECKING FLYWHEEL HOUSING FACE RUNOUT
A-Bottom. B-Right side. C-Top. D-Left side.
1. Fasten a dial indicator to the crankshaft flange so the indicator anvil will touch the flywheel housing face.
2. Pry the crankshaft to rear before taking readings at each point.
3. With dial indicator set at .000 in. (0,0 mm) at point (A), rotate crankshaft and take readings at points (B), (C) and (D).
4. The difference between the lowest and highest readings taken at all four points should not exceed .012 in. (0,304 mm), which is the maximum permissible flywheel housing face runout.
Checking Flywheel Housing Bore Runout
Make tool setup from parts of 8S2328 Dial Test Indicator Group.
1. Fasten the dial indicator to the crankshaft flange and adjust it to read .000 in. (0,0 mm) when the anvil is touching bore at point (1).
2. Pry the crankshaft in such a manner to remove crankshaft main bearing clearance when taking readings at each point.
3. Rotate crankshaft and take readings at points (2), (3) and (4).
4. The difference between the lowest and highest readings taken at all four points should not exceed .012 in. (0,304 mm), which is the maximum permissible flywheel housing bore runout.

NOTE: If any method other than described here is used, always consider bearing clearances to obtain correct readings.
Flywheel Housing
Removal and Installation
PREPARING TO REMOVE THE FLYWHEEL HOUSING
1-Cover. 2-Flywheel housing.
1. Remove the aftercooler as described in the covering topic.
2. Remove the flywheel as previously described.
3. Back off all the bolts securing the engine block to the oil pan base and remove or loosen the bolts, as required, which mount components between the engine block and oil pan base. Raise the rear of the engine approximately 3/8" and put spacers between the engine block and oil pan base.
REMOVING FLYWHEEL HOUSING
3-Thrower. 4-Ring seal. 5-Baffle.
4. Install two eyebolts through the aftercooler support on the flywheel housing and attach to a suitable hoist.
5. Remove the bolts securing the flywheel housing (2) to the engine block and to the fuel pump and governor drive housing gear cover (1).
6. Loosen the remaining bolts in the fuel pump and governor drive housing gear cover (1). On D399 Engines, loosen bolts mounting the fuel injection pump and governor drive housing to the block. At assembly, apply 7M7260 Liquid Gasket Material to the metal-to-metal joints.
7. Remove the flywheel housing as illustrated.
NOTICE |
---|
Move the flywheel housing away from the dowel pins evenly on each side by prying between the flywheel housing and the crankcase near the dowel pins to avoid damaging the thrower (3). |
8. Inspect the baffle (5) and replace it if worn or damaged. Nicks and burrs should be removed from the chamfered edge to prevent damage to the piston ring seal during installation.
9. Inspect the gasket and replace those sections that are damaged.
10. Install the flywheel housing.
NOTE: The leading edge of the baffle (5) is chamfered so that the piston ring seal (4) will compress in its groove and center in the baffle bore.
11. Remove the spacers from between the oil pan base and engine block, apply 7M7456 Loctite to bolt threads and tighten bolts. Install and/or tighten bolts removed or loosened that secure components to the block and engine oil pan base in step 3.
Checking Flywheel Face Runout
Make tool setup from parts of 8S2328 Dial Test Indicator Group.
1. Mount a dial indicator as shown and pry the crankshaft in the same direction before taking all readings so the end clearance is always in the same direction.
2. Set the dial indicator (3) to read .000 in. (0,0 mm).
3. Turn the flywheel and take readings every 90°.
4. The difference between the lowest and highest readings taken at all four points should not exceed .006 in. (0,152 mm), which is the maximum permissible flywheel face runout.

Checking Flywheel Bore Runout
Make tool setup from parts of 8S2328 Dial Test Indicator Group.
1. Mount the dial indicator (4) and adjust it so the universal attachment (3) contacts the flywheel face as shown.
2. Adjust the dial indicator to read .000 in. (0,0 mm) then take readings every 90° around the flywheel.
3. The difference between the lowest and highest readings taken at all four points should not exceed .006 in. (0,152 mm), which is the maximum permissible flywheel bore runout. Flywheel clutch pilot bearing bore run out should not exceed .005 in. (0,127 mm).
