Oil Pump - (Two-section Pump)

Usage:

Operation And Lubrication

The oil pump is a two-section, outlet pressure controlled, gear-type pump, driven by an idler gear from the front gear of the crankshaft. Each section of the pump has three gears.

The pump is bolted to the lower right front corner of the engine block.

The rear section of the pump draws oil from the main sump of the engine base and delivers it to the engine block for engine lubrication. The pressure regulating valve limits the oil pressure to the main bearings to approximately 45 PSI.

The front section of the pump acts as a scavenge pump. The oil is drawn from the scavenge sumps and is dumped into the engine main sump. The scavenge circuit makes angular operation of the engine possible without danger of starving the lubricating system of oil.

Oil Pump Removal And Installation

1-Oil line. 2-Pressure oil pipe connection. 3-Fuel supply line. 4-Fuel return line. 5-Fuel priming pump line. 6-Bolts (six). 7-Pressure oil pipe connection. 8-Bolts (two).

When all lines have been disconnected and the bolts (6) removed, support the oil pump assembly with a suitable hoist. Remove the bolts (8) and lift the scavenge oil pump (9) and main oil pump (10) from the engine as a unit.

REMOVING OIL PUMP
9-Scavenge oil pump. 10-Main oil pump.

Install in reverse order of removal.

Main Oil Pump Disassembly And Assembly

1. Remove the fuel transfer pump as described in the topic, FUEL TRANSFER PUMP.

2. Remove the cover plate from the back of the oil pump.

3. Remove the nine bolts (1) which secure the manifold (2) to the pump assembly.

OIL INTAKE MANIFOLD
1-Bolts. 2-Oil intake manifold.

NOTE: During assembly, the two longest bolts (1) go into the lower two holes in the manifold (2).

4. Inspect the bearing (3) and replace if necessary by driving the bearing out of the manifold.

PREPARING TO DISASSEMBLE THE OIL PUMP
2-Oil intake manifold. 3-Drive shaft bearing. 4-Cover.

DISASSEMBLING MAIN OIL PUMP
5-Main oil pressure manifold. 6-Drive gear. 7-Idler gears.

5. Remove cover assembly (4), clean and inspect the screen. Replace with a new cover assembly if the screen is damaged.

NOTE: Apply 8H5137 Form-A-Gasket compound on threads of plugs before installing in manifold (5).

Scavenge Oil Pump Disassembly And Assembly

PREPARING TO DISASSEMBLE SCAVENGE OIL PUMP
1-Divider. 2-Bearing. 3-O-ring seal. 4-Idler gears.

Inspect bearing (2) and replace if necessary.

1. Remove the key from beneath the drive gear (7).

2. The idler shafts (8) are pressed into the scavenge oil pump intake manifold (9) and can be removed if necessary. If new shafts (8) are to be installed they should be chilled before installation.

SCAVENGE OIL PUMP DISASSEMBLY
5-Scavenge oil pump manifold. 6-Drive shaft. 7-Drive gear. 8-Idler shafts. 9-Scavenge oil pump intake manifold.

3. Inspect the bearings at both ends of the oil manifold (9).

NOTE: If either bearing (11) or the bearing at the other end of the oil manifold (9) requires replacement, remove the retainer (10) and press out the bearing.

BEARING REMOVAL
9-Scavenge oil pump intake manifold. 10-Retainer. 11-Bearing.

4. Check all O-ring seals for damage and reassemble in reverse order of disassembly.

Pressure Regulating Valve

The pressure regulating valve is located directly to the rear of the main oil pump. The valve maintains an oil pressure limit of approximately 45 PSI at the gauge. Excess oil which passes the pressure regulating valve dumps directly into the engine main sump.

Removal and Installation

1-Oil tube. 2-Flange. 3-Bolts. 4-Regulating valve housing and tube assembly.

Remove the bolts which secure the pipe to the flange (2).

REMOVING PRESSURE REGULATING VALVE

Work the regulator valve housing out of the block and the tube assembly away from the oil pump outlet tube to facilitate removal without damaging the O-ring seals.

Inspect seals and install in reverse order of removal.

Disassembly and Assembly

Remove the tube assembly and tee from the valve housing (3).

PRESSURE REGULATING VALVE DISASSEMBLY
1-Spring. 2-Seal. 3-Housing. 4-Plunger. 5-Guide. 6-Seal.

While the pressure regulating valve is disassembled, clean the housing (3) and before assembling, inspect seals (2) and (6) for damage and replace if necessary.
