Usage:
The engine oil pump picks up oil from the main oil sumps (2) through a suction bell (1). The main oil sumps are connected by passages beneath the center scavenge sump (6).
Two end scavenge sumps (3) and (8) are connected to the center scavenge sump by tubes (4) and (7). The scavenge pump picks up oil from the center sump (6) through a suction bell (5) and delivers the oil to the main sumps through a passage in the oil pan base.
Two plates are installed over the main oil sumps and are sealed with a rubber gasket.
NOTE: Engines equipped with a single-section oil pump do not have the scavenge sumps. The entire pan forms a single reservoir rather than the divided system shown here. See the topic, DISASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLY (ENGINES EQUIPPED WITH SINGLE-SECTION PUMP), for illustration.
OIL PAN BASE ASSEMBLY
1-Main oil pump suction bell. 2-Main sumps. 3-Front scavenge sump. 4-Tube. 5-Scavenge pump suction bell. 6-Center scavenge sump. 7-Tube. 8-Rear scavenge sump.
Removal And Installation
1. Attach a suitable hoist to the engine and lift it from the base.
2. Remove the base from under the engine and block the engine securely.
3. Inspect the gaskets and replace if damaged.
4. Install in the reverse order of removal.
PREPARING TO REMOVE THE OIL PAN BASE
1-Bolts. 2-Turbocharger lubrication valve inlet line. 3-Fuel transfer pump fuel lines. 4-Oil pan base. 5-Tee assembly. 6-Regulating valve. 7-Oil pump assembly.
NOTE: At installation apply 8H5137 Form-A-Gasket to threads of all bolts. The 21/2 in. long bolts are installed at (9) and, on later engines, a single ground body bolt is installed at (8).
OIL PAN BASE INSTALLATION (Typical Example)
8-Right rear location of ground body bolt. 9-Location of two 21/2 in. long bolts.

OIL PAN BASE ASSEMBLY
1-Plate. 2-Plate. 3-Scavenge pump outlet. 4-Regulating valve inlet. 5-Main pump suction outlet. 6-Scavenge pump return inlet.
Remove the plates (1) and (2) to inspect the oil pan base.
NOTE: A screen assembly behind the scavenge pump outlet can be serviced by removing the cover on the front of the oil pan base. Make certain no air or oil leaks exist when reassembled.
There is a screen between the oil pan base and filler pipe. Inspect the screen and clean or replace if necessary.
Replace the gaskets if damaged.
Disassembly And Assembly - (Engines Equipped with Single-section Pump)
1. A screen in front of the suction bell (1) can be removed for service or replacement by removing the cover on the front of the oil pan base assembly. Make certain no air or oil leaks exist when reassembled.
NOTE: For removal of the regulating valve (2), see the covering topic.
OIL PAN BASE ASSEMBLY
1-Suction bell. 2-Regulating valve. 3-Oil level gauge. 4-Oil filler pipe. 5-Oil level gauge. 6-Gasket.
2. There is a screen between the oil pan base and the filler pipe (4). Inspect the screen and clean or replace if necessary.
3. Inspect the gaskets (6) and replace if necessary. The gasket is made in sections and if any section is damaged, all the sections should be replaced.
4. Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly.
