COPY OF OWNER NOTIFICATION FOR U.S. AND CANADIAN OWNERS XYZ Corporation 3240 Arrow Drive Anywhere, YZ 99999 PRIORITY - Product Improvement Program to inspect/repair fan drive bearing race on certain C32 fan drives. MODELS INVOLVED - Certain C32 Generator Sets Dear Caterpillar Product Owner: On certain C32 generator sets, the bearing race for the front bearing in the fan drive may have been installed incorrectly. The generator set needs to be inspected for correct installation of the bearing race. If the bearing race has been installed incorrectly, the fan drive will have to be disassembled and the bearing reinstalled correctly. Failure to perform this operation may result in premature failure of the drive belts. You will not be charged for the service performed. Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service. Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 15Nov2006 when scheduling this service. Refer to SEBU8088, Operation and Maintenance Manual for safety precautions. Refer to SENR9716, Disassembly and Assembly Manual for removal and installation procedures. Check fan drive end play: 1. Remove belt guards to gain access to the belt tensioner. |
2. Release all belt tension. Removal of the belts is not necessary. |
3. By hand, move the fan drive shaft fore and aft. A very slight end play should be felt, but there should be almost no actual movement. A very light pry bar force may be used to check end play, but hand force is recommended to avoid damage to the drive. If the fan drive exhibits over 1/8 inch of end play, the fan drive should be removed from the engine and the bearing inspected for proper installation. |
Remove and Inspect Fan Drive Bearing: 4. Remove fan guards. |
5. Remove fan and secure to prevent damage. |
6. Remove belts. |
7. Remove bolts holding fan drive to engine. Remove fan drive. |
8. Disassemble fan drive by removing the six bolts which hold the hub to the pulley. Remove the hub. |

9. Remove the two bolts holding the washer to the shaft. Remove the shaft to gain access to the bearing. Remove the cylindrical roller bearing and outer race. |

10. The outer race must be installed first. Install the outer race with the numbers toward the engine. Install the cylindrical roller bearing. 11. Install washer and tighten bolts to the proper torque value. 12. Install hub and tighten bolts to the proper torque value. 13. Lubricate assembly. 14. Install fan drive back onto the engine. 15. Install belts and adjust belt tension. 16. Install fan. 17. Install fan and belt guards. |
