Usage:
The planetary reduction gears mounted on the rear of the marine gear housing. The planetary reduction is the only reduction that takes place in the marine gear.
Removal
1. Remove the oil pump, oil manifold and selector valve. See the topic, LUBRICATION COMPONENTS.
1-Oil tube. 2-Cover.
LIFTING EYE
2. Grind a lifting eye so it can be installed in the cover (2). See the illustration.
3. Remove two diagonally opposed bolts and install two 5/8" - 11 (NC) guide pins.
4. Attach a suitable hoist and support the reduction gear.
5. Install two 1/2" - 13 (NC) forcing screws in the holes provided.
6. Remove the remaining bolts securing the reduction gear to the marine gear housing and pull the reduction gear away from the housing with the forcing screws.
REMOVING THE REDUCTION GEAR
7. Remove the bolts securing the ring gear to the housing and remove.
REMOVING THE PLANETARY RING GEAR
8. Before installing the reduction gear, inspect all gaskets and replace if damaged.
9. The guide pins, installed for removal, should be used to pilot the reduction gear when installing it.
Disassembly And Assembly
1-Retainer. 2-Coupling.
1. Remove the bolts securing the coupling retainer (1) to the carrier shaft (3).
2. Install two eyebolts in the coupling (2) and attach a suitable lifting hoist.
3. Lift the coupling (2) from the carrier shaft (3) as illustrated.
REMOVING COUPLING
3-Carrier shaft.
4. Remove the bolts securing the seal retainer (5) to the cover (6).
5. Install two 3/8" - 16 (NC) forcing screws in the seal retainer (5) and remove it as illustrated.
REMOVING SEAL RETAINER
4-Seals (two). 5-Seal retainer. 6-Cover.
6. Inspect the seals (4) and the O-ring seal for damage or wear and replace if necessary.
7. Use an 8B7548 Push Puller with 8B7549 Legs and 8B7559 Adapters, a 7F9540 Puller with 8B7560 Step Plate and a 6F25 Pump Group to remove the bearing (7) and cover (6) as illustrated.
REMOVING REAR BEARING AND COVER FROM PLANET CARRIER
6-Cover. 7-Bearing.
8. After the bearing (7) and cover (6) have been pulled from the carrier shaft, lift the cover and bearing off with a suitable hoist as illustrated.
LIFTING COVER WITH REAR BEARING
9. Lift the bearing (7), inner spacer (9) and outer race (8) out of the cover (6) as illustrated.
REMOVING REAR BEARING FROM COVER
8-Outer race. 9-Inner spacer.
REMOVING INNER SPACER
10-Sealing rings.
10. Inspect the sealing rings (10) for damage or wear and replace if necessary.
REMOVING OUTER RACE
11-Outer spacer.
11. Lift the outer spacer (11) from the cover as illustrated.
REMOVING OUTER SPACER
REMOVING REAR BEARING RACE
12. Using a mild steel drift, tap the rear bearing race from the cover. Care should be taken not to cock the bearing race in the bore.
13. Block the planet carrier so the planet gear shaft (12) can be removed as illustrated. The planet gear cover is shown removed for illustration purposes only.
14. Remove the lock (13) securing the planet gear shaft (12) and remove the shaft.
NOTICE |
---|
To prevent damage to the planet gear shaft (12), do not let it fall from the carrier. |
PREPARING TO REMOVE PLANET GEAR
12-Planet gear shaft. 13-Lock.
REMOVING PLANET GEAR SHAFT
15. Remove the planet gear and washers (14) as illustrated.
16. Block the planet carrier so the front carrier bearing can be pushed off the carrier shaft.
