Usage:
Standard Differential Components
(1) Cover. (2) Thrust washer. (3) Side gear. (4) Spider. (5) Pinions. (6) Thrust washers. (7) Side gear. (8) Thrust washer. (9) Case.
Disassemble Standard Differential
Start By:
a. disassemble axle housing
1. Make matching marks on case (9) and cover (1). This will help ensure that these parts are reassembled in their original positions.
2. Remove eight long bolts and four short bolts securing cover (1) to case (9).
3. Separate cover (1) from case (9). Use a plastic hammer, if necessary, to loosen the parts.
4. Remove thrust washer (2) and side gear (3) from the differential assembly.
5. Remove spider (4) assembly from the differential assembly.
6. Remove four thrust washers (6) and four pinions (5) from spider (4).
7. Remove remaining side gear (7) and thrust washer (8) from inside case (9).
8. Wash all parts in clean solvent. Blow dry with filtered compressed air and check for damage as follows:
a. Inspect the inside surfaces of cover (1) and case (9). Look for scoring, pitting, or burrs.
b. Check both surfaces of all thrust washers (2) and (6) for excessive wear or damage.
c. Inspect the four trunion arms of spider (4). Look for cracks or excessive wear on the spider.
d. Check the teeth and splines of two side gears (3) and (7) for excessive wear or damage.
e. Look for damage to the teeth and the bore of four pinions (5).
9. Repair or replace damaged components as necessary.
NOTICE |
---|
Replace thrust washers, side gears, and pinions in sets only. Mixing old parts with new parts will cause excessive wear and premature failure of the differential. |
Assemble Standard Differential
1. Apply a light coat of oil to the inside surfaces of cover (1) and case (9).
2. Install thrust washer (8) and side gear (7) inside case (9), as shown.
3. Install four pinions (5) and four thrust washers (6) onto spider (4).
4. Install the spider (4) assembly into the differential on top of side gear (7).
5. Install side gear (3) and thrust washer (2) on top of the spider assembly.
6. Install cover (1) over side gear (3). Make sure the scribe marks on cover (1) and case (9) are aligned.
7. Install four short bolts through cover (1) into case (9). Tighten the four bolts in a cross pattern.
8. Check the rotating resistance of the differential gears as follows:
a. Put the differential assembly into a vise with soft metal jaws. Tighten the vise carefully to prevent damaging the differential.
b. Insert one of the axle shafts, with installed nut, into the differential. Make sure the spline of the axle shaft engages the spline of the side gear.
c. Attach a torque wrench to the nut at the end of the axle shaft and rotate the differential gears. As the gears rotate, read the value indicated on the torque wrench.
d. The rotating resistance measured in step c, must be no more than 68 N·m (50 lb. ft.). If rotating resistance is excessive, the differential must be disassembled. Find and repair the trouble before installing the differential into the axle.
9. If the rolling resistance is all right, install eight long bolts through cover (1) into case (9). Tighten the bolts in a cross pattern.
End By:
a. assemble axle housing
