Introduction

This procedure will test the ability of the service brakes to hold the machine.

Machine Preparation

Make sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and clear of obstacles.

The service brake test should be performed on a dry, level surface.

Fasten your seat belt before testing the brakes.

Use the following test to determine whether the service brake is functional. This test is not intended to measure the maximum holding ability of the service brake.

Test Procedure

  1. Start the engine. Raise the blade slightly. Apply the service brake control.

  2. Place the transmission in the FIRST SPEED FORWARD position.

  3. Increase engine speed and hold at 800 RPM to 825 RPM (do NOT exceed 850 RPM) for 15 seconds. The machine should not move.

  4. Reduce engine speed to low idle. Engage the parking brake. Lower the blade to the ground. Place the transmission in the NEUTRAL position for 2 minutes to cool the torque converter and transmission oil. Stop the engine.

Note: The friction material for the brake may require replacement. The new friction material for the brake may require conditioning for maximum performance. Consult your Caterpillar dealer or see Special Instruction, SEHS9187 for the procedure for conditioning.
