Recommended inspection and maintenance will improve service life of universal joints on the machines listed above.
Follow the inspection and maintenance procedure on the universal joints.
- Visually inspect spider and bearing group after 2000 hours of operation and at every 250-hour service. Ensure that the balance weights are present on the slip joint.
Look for missing paint on the slip joint or broken tack welds. If nothing seems unusual, then the balance weights are properly in place.
- The operators should pay attention to noise and vibration along with significant grease loss and paint discoloration. Grease loss prior to the first 500 hours of universal joint operation should be ignored because of excess grease from universal joint assembly.
If grease loss after the 500 hours of operation is observed, replacement of both set screw plugs in the universal joint cross with a 5W-2817 Grease Fitting or equivalent zerk is acceptable.
If converting the universal joint to be regreasable, Caterpillar recommends that the universal joints be greased every 500 hours with lithium complex grease that contains no moly additives. 1P-0808 Multipurpose Grease is an example of acceptable grease for relubrication.
Note: The grease should be pumped into the universal joints until new grease can be see past the seals on all four trunnions.
Note: Use production parts to replace spider and bearing group if any of these signs are present. Use a 435-3382 Wrench to seat the universal joints during assembly.
