Brake Line Pressure for Center and Rear Axle - Test

Usage:

745 3F6

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent injury or death, make sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and obstructions before operating the machine.

------ WARNING! ------

To prevent personal injury and/or equipment damage from failed lines or components while the hydraulic test equipment is returned to the open flow position, slowly open the hydraulic test equipment valve while monitoring the pump flow.

If pump flow does not increase as the valve is opened, shut the engine off and determine what is preventing the pump from upstroking.

------ WARNING! ------

Hot hydraulic oil under high pressure can remain in the components of the hydraulic system or the power train system after the engine has been stopped. The uncontrolled release of the hydraulic oil can cause sudden machine movement and can also result in the following conditions:

  • Burns

  • The penetration of body tissue

  • Other personal injury

  • Death

If hydraulic oil penetrates body tissue, the injury must be treated immediately by a doctor who is familiar with this type of injury. Use a board or a piece of cardboard to check for a hydraulic oil leak. Make sure that all of the attachments have been lowered to the ground and that all trapped pressure has been released from the hydraulic system and the power train system. Also, make sure that the hydraulic oil is cool before the removal of any components or lines. Remove the hydraulic oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from rotating and moving parts. Stay clear of all rotating and moving parts.

Never attempt adjustments while the machine is moving or the engine is running unless otherwise specified.

The machine must be parked on a level surface and the engine stopped.

Attach a "Do Not Operate" or similar warning tag to the start switch and controls before servicing, repairing, or making adjustments to the machine.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Test Preparation

  1. Move the machine to a smooth, horizontal location that is away from operating machines and away from personnel.

  2. Permit only one operator on the machine. Keep all other personnel away from the machine or in the operator sight.

  3. Rotate the steering wheel to a NEUTRAL position.

  4. Move the transmission control to park to engage the parking brake.

  5. Lower or retract the implements.

  6. Stop the engine.

  7. Turn the key to the ON position, but do not start the engine.

  8. Verify that the implement controls are UNLOCKED.

  9. Move the control levers through the full range of travel several times. Moving the control levers should relieve any pressure that may be present in the implement hydraulic system.

  10. Install the steering frame lock. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Steering Frame Lock" for details.

  11. Locate valve group (1) and attach tooling (T1) to center and rear service brake test port (2).

Test Procedure

  1. Start the engine and warm up the hydraulics if necessary. The hydraulic oil temperature should be at least 60° C (140° F)

  2. Operate the engine at low idle for one minute to allow the service brake system to fully charge.

  3. Press the brake pedal and read the pressure on the gauge. Compare the pressure to the values in Table 1 in the "Specifications" Section.

Note: If the pressure is incorrect, there may be a problem with the service brake control valve, or valve group (1).

  4. Release the brake pedal and observe pressure gauge. The pressure should fall below 30 kPa (4 psi). Residual pressure above this value can cause brake drag.

Note: If residual pressure occurs in the braking system, there may be a problem with the service brake control valve, or the braking system may require purging. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Service Brake Air - Purge"

  5. Shut off the engine. Remove the pressure gauge and the steering frame lock from the machine. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Steering Frame Lock".
