Case Drain Flow for Piston Motor - Test and Adjust - Split Drum

Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may cause personal injury.

Always start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area, and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside.

Personal injury can result from rotating and moving parts. Stay clear of all rotating and moving parts.

Never attempt adjustments while the machine is moving or the engine is running unless otherwise specified.

The machine must be parked on a level surface and the engine stopped.

Attach a "Do Not Operate" or similar warning tag to the start switch and controls before servicing, repairing, or making adjustments to the machine.

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent injury or death, make sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and obstructions before operating the machine.


------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

(1) Tool (L), Tool (M), and Tool (N) are part of the 466-6258 Communication Adapter Gp.

Note: Park the machine on soft dirt or place tires under the drums. Alternately, the machine can be lifted onto jacks, or the machine drums may be supported by air bags. The weight of the machine is approximately 10480 kg (2300 lb).

Note: The machine is equipped with two vibratory motors. One vibratory motor is on the left side of the front drum. The second vibratory motor is on the right side of the rear drum. The following procedure illustrates the test on the rear vibratory motor. The same procedure can be used to test the front vibratory motor.

  1. Drive the machine to a smooth, horizontal surface.

  2. Move propel lever (1) to the NEUTRAL position.

  3. Move parking brake switch (2) to the ON position.

  4. Place the engine in ECO mode or low idle.

    1. Select "Main Menu" (3) on the machine display.

    2. Select "Machine Setup" (4).

    3. Select "Engine Spd Sw" (5).

    4. Select "ECO" (6) or "Low" (7).

  5. Move engine start switch (8) to the OFF position.

  6. Connect Tool (M) and Tool (N) to Tool (L). Connect Tool (N) to diagnostic connector (9). Connect Tool (M) to USB port on Tool (K).

  7. Apply Tool (G) on the NPT side of each Tool (B). Install one Tool (B) in each side of Tool (A).

  8. Assemble Tool (C) and Tool (D). Connect one Tool (D) to each Tool (B) on Tool (A).

  9. Assemble Tool (E) and Tool (F). Make two sets of this tool assembly. Connect Tool (E) from one of tool assemblies to Tool (C) on each side of the flowmeter.

  10. Disconnect brake supply hose assembly (10) at the drums. Use Tool (R) to plug the fitting of the hose assembly. Use Tool (P) to cap the port.

  11. Loosen clamp (13). Remove hose (11) from adapter (12). Plug hose with Tool (S) to limit oil leakage.

  12. Loosen clamp (16). Remove hose (16) from adapter (15). Plug hose with Tool (S) to limit oil leakage.

  13. Remove adapter (12) from tee (14). Remove adapter (15) from tee (14).

  14. Remove tee (14) from the vibratory motor.

  15. Install adapter (12) in tee (14). Install adapter (15) in tee (14).

  16. Remove Tool (S) from hose (11). Install hose on adapter (12). Tighten clamp (13) on the hose and the adapter.

  17. Remove Tool (S) from hose (16). Install hose on adapter (15). Tighten clamp (17) on the hose and the adapter.

  18. Install Tool (H) in the case drain port in the motor. Install Tool (J) in branch of tee (14).

  19. Connect Tool (E) on inlet side of Tool (B) to Tool (H). Connect Tool (E) on outlet side of Tool (B) to Tool (J).

  20. Move engine start switch (8) to the START position. Release the switch when the engine starts.

  21. Place the engine in high idle.

  22. Operate the hydraulic system until the oil temperature reaches the test temperature of 45 °C (113 °F).

  23. Move parking brake switch (2) to the OFF position.

  24. Use vibratory frequency switch (18) to set the vibratory system in the low frequency/high amplitude mode on both drums.

    Note: Two things indicate when the vibratory system is in the low frequency/high amplitude mode. First, "low frequency" will appear on the display. Second, one LED next to vibratory frequency switch (14) will be illuminated.

  25. If necessary, use drum select switch (19) to select both drums.

    Note: Two things indicate when the machine is in dual drum mode. First, "Vibe Drum Select Dual" will appear on the display. Second, both the LEDs next to drum select switch (19) will be illuminated.

  26. Set the vibratory system in the manual mode.

    1. Select "Main Menu" (20) on the machine display.

    2. Select "Machine Setup" (21).

    3. Select "Vibe Turn On Speed" (22).

    4. Select "Manual" mode (23).

  27. Launch the Plus+1TM program on the computer to enable the vibe test mode.

    Note: First-time users need to perform the tasks in the Communication and Connections Wizard. This wizard allows the Windows® operating system to recognize the USB device. Follow the on-screen instructions.

  28. Click "Status" icon (24).

  29. Check for "Active Codes". Clear any open "Active Codes".

  30. Click "Machine Control" (25).

  32. Click "Vibe Test Modes" (27).

  33. Click "Enable" icon (28) to enable the "Normal Vibe Test Mode".

  34. When "Normal Vibe Test Mode" is in "Enabled" mode, the Plus+1TM program is launched.

  35. Press vibratory control switch (29) on the propel lever. The vibratory control switch must be held in the ON position for at least 2 seconds for the vibratory system to actuate.

  36. Read flow on Tool (B). The flow should be less than 3.5 L/min (0.9 US gpm) to 9 L/min (2.4 US gpm).

    Note: Motor case drain flow cannot be adjusted. If the case drain flow is greater than 9 L/min (2.4 US gpm), determine the source of excess flow and repair. If the flow is less than 3.5 L/min (0.9 US gpm), inspect the flushing valve and orifices.

  37. Use vibratory control switch (29) to stop the vibratory system.

  38. Place the engine in ECO mode or in low idle.

  39. Move engine start switch (8) to the OFF position.

  40. Perform Step 11 through Step 19 in reverse order to remove the tooling, and reconnect the case drain lines to the vibratory motor.

  41. Connect tee (14) to the vibratory motor.

  42. If necessary, repeat this test for the other vibratory motor.

  43. Remove Tool (R) from brake supply hose assembly (10) at all four drum propel motors. Remove Tool (P) from the brake inlet port in all four drum propel motors. Connect the brake supply hose to the brake inlet ports on the propel motors.

  44. Remove tooling from diagnostic connector (9).
