Hot engine components can cause injury from burns. Before performing maintenance on the engine, allow the engine and the components to cool.


  1. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  2. Open door assembly (1).

  3. Cut the cable strap and use Tooling (A) to disconnect nitrogen oxide sensor (2).

  4. Cut the cable strap and disconnect harness assembly (3).

  5. Remove bolts (4) and nitrogen oxide sensor (2).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install nitrogen oxide sensor (2) in the reverse order of removal.

    1. Apply Tooling (B) to the threads of nitrogen oxide sensor (2).

      Note: If a new nitrogen oxide sensor is being installed, do not apply Tooling (B) to the threads. New nitrogen oxide sensors should have the required lubricant already on the threads.

    2. Use Tooling (A) to tighten nitrogen oxide sensor (2) to a torque of 50 ± 10 N·m (37 ± 7 lb ft).
