Engine Oil Filter and Oil Filter Base - Remove and Install

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Open the hood and remove the left side engine panel.

  2. Drain the engine Oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change" for the correct draining and filling procedures.

  3. Disconnect hose assembly (1). Use Tooling (A) to remove engine oil filter (2). Remove engine oil filter (2).

  4. Remove bolts (3), bolts (6), bolts (5), and filter base (4).

  5. Remove tube assembly (7) and the O-ring seal from filter base (4).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install filter base (4) and engine oil filter (2) in the reverse order of removal.

    1. Lubricate the bore for the O-ring seal of tube assembly (7) lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.

    2. Use the following procedure to tighten engine oil filter (2):

      1. Lubricate the seal and bore of engine oil filter (2) lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed. Install engine oil filter (2) in vertical orientation only.

      2. Tighten engine oil filter (2) to a torque of 100 ± 5 N.m (74 ± 4 lb ft).

      3. Ensure that there is no gap between engine oil filter (2) and filter base (4).
