Fuel Injection Pump : Other Failure Mode
The Electronic Control Module (ECM) has detected that the high-pressure fuel pump performance has degraded. The high-pressure fuel pump is failed.
1077-12
Engine Fuel Injection Pump Controller : Failure
1684-12
Fuel Injection Pump : Failure
The ECM has detected that the high-pressure fuel pump has failed.

Note: A faulty fuel rail pressure sensor will NOT cause this code to log.

This diagnostic monitors the output of each of the pumping elements internal to the fuel pump using the fuel rail pressure sensor. The Electronic Control Module (ECM) monitors the rail pressure and can detect when each plunger internal to the fuel pump is pressurized and pumps fuel to the fuel rail. When the ECM detects that one or more of the plungers is not putting out the same amount of pressure as the other plungers, the fault code comes active. This diagnostic is intended to alert the operator that the fuel pump has failed and performance issues may result.

The -11 diagnostic is intended to alert the operator that the fuel pump performance has degraded to the point where performance losses may be noticed.

The -12 diagnostic is intended to alert the operator that the fuel pump has failed and performance issues or more damage may result.

If the fuel pump is not replaced, further fuel system damage or engine damage could result.

Probable Causes

  • High-pressure fuel pump

Recommended Actions

Note: When performing the "Fuel System Functional Test" after the replacement of the high-pressure fuel pump, it is not necessary to remove the accumulator plugs.

Troubleshooting Test Step  Value  Result

1. Replace the High-Pressure Fuel Pump

A. Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly, Fuel Pump (High Pressure) - Remove and Install.

Pump

Result: The high-pressure fuel pump was replaced.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Clear the Fault Codes

A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.

B. Clear the fault codes.

Codes

Result: The fault codes were cleared.

Repair: Perform a "Fuel System Functional Test" in Cat ET. Return the machine to service.

If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
