Introduction

This special instruction covers the procedure to rework the final drive on the above Load Haul Dump Machines. This supplemental product support literature should be used with the appropriate Service Manual and the appropriate Parts Manual that is available for this standard machine.

Read the entire Special Instruction. Understand the information before you perform any procedures. Understand the information before you order any parts.

Safety Section

Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs. A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to perform these functions properly.

Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard. Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive.

Ensure that all personnel are safe when using a tool, procedure, work method, or operating technique not recommended by Caterpillar. Ensure that the product will not be damaged or the product made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance, or the repair procedures that are used.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from machine articulation or movement. Machine frames can move and a person can be crushed. Connect the steering frame lock between the front and rear frames before working on the machine.

Before operating the machine, place the steering frame lock in the stored position.

Failure to place the steering frame lock into the stored position before operating can result in loss of steering.

------ WARNING! ------

Hot oil and components can cause personal injury.

Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Assembly Procedure

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, thoroughly clean all parts in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Do not use wiping cloths or rags to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. Dirt and other contaminants can damage the precision component. Perform assembly procedures on a clean work surface. Keep components covered and protected always.

  33. Apply clean final drive oil to the threads of five 031-3185 Bolts (24) prior to installation.

  34. Install 463-6115 Ring (23) and five 031-3185 Bolts (24) evenly spaced, do not tighten the bolts.

  35. Using a depth micrometer through three holes (25), measure the distance from the top of 463-6115 Ring (23) to the top of the spindle. Calculate the average value of the three measurements.

  36. Tighten five 031-3185 Bolts (24) to a torque of 90 ± 14 N·m (66 ± 10 lb ft).

  37. Rotate the wheel assembly two to three complete revolutions.

  38. Loosen five 031-3185 Bolts (24) until 463-6115 Ring (23) is loose.

  39. Rotate the wheel assembly two to three complete revolutions.

  40. Using a depth micrometer through three holes (25), measure the distance from the top of 463-6115 Ring (23) to the top of the spindle. Calculate the average value of the three measurements.

  41. Compare the average value from Step 35 to the average value from Step 40.

  42. If the difference is equal to or less than 0.05 mm (0.002 inch) go to Step 44.

  43. If the difference is greater than 0.05 mm (0.002 inch), repeat Step 36 through Step 43.

Note: If the measurement found at Step 41 is still greater than 0.05 mm (0.002 inch) disassemble the parts to determine the problem.

  44. Tighten five 031-3185 Bolts (24) to a torque of 40 ± 7 N·m (30 ± 5 lb ft).

  45. Rotate the wheel assembly two to three complete revolutions.

  46. Tighten five 031-3185 Bolts (24) to a torque of 40 ± 7 N·m (30 ± 5 lb ft).

  47. Using a depth micrometer through three holes (25), measure the distance from the top of 463-6115 Ring (23) to the top of the spindle. Calculate the average value of the three measurements.

  48. Remove five 031-3185 Bolts (24) and 463-6115 Ring (23).

  49. Apply Loctite 7649 to the five holes where five 031-3185 Bolts (24) were removed.

  50. Using an outside micrometer, measure the thickness of 463-6115 Ring (23). Make a measurement at each of the three holes (25) that were used for the depth measurement. Calculate the average value of the three measurements.

  51. Subtract the average thickness of 463-6115 Ring (23) found in Step 50 from the value found in Step 47. This difference is the clearance between 463-6115 Ring (23) and the top of the spindle.

  52. Add 0.10 mm (0.004 inch) to the value found in Step 51 to give the thickness of shims required.
