This Special Instruction for the USN Seabees 279D Compact Track Loader is a supplement to the Commercial Service Manual, UENR5276. The specific machine configuration is used with the Commercial Parts Manual, SEBP7181.

Personal injury or death can result from improper lifting or blocking. When a hoist or jack is used to lift any part or component, stand clear of the area. Be sure the hoist or jack has the correct capacity to lift a component. Install blocks or stands before performance of any work under a heavy component. Approximate weights of the components are shown. Clean all surfaces where parts are to be installed.

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Welding on Electronically Controlled Engines

Proper welding procedures are necessary in order to avoid damage to electronic controls. Perform welding on the engine according to the following procedure.

1. Set the engine control to the "STOP" mode.

2. Turn OFF the fuel supply to the engine.

3. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.

4. Disconnect the engine electronic components from the wiring harnesses: ECM, throttle actuator, actuator for the turbocharger compressor bypass, fuel metering valve and sensors.

5. Protect the wiring harnesses from welding debris and/or from welding spatter.

NOTICE
Do NOT use electrical components (ECM or sensors) or electronic component grounding points for grounding the welder.

6. Connect the welder ground cable directly to the component that will be welded. Place the clamp close to the weld. Clamp placement is important to reduce the possibility of welding current damage to the engine bearings, electrical components, and other engine components.

7. Use standard welding procedures to weld the materials together.

1. Use 2H-3922 Lockwasher (3) and 8H-5303 Nut (4) to install 9H-2082 Disconnect Switch (5) onto the 460-0674 Bracket As (2) .

   Tighten 8H-5303 Nut (4) to 23 ± 4 N·m (200 ± 35 lb in).

   Actuating force ... 2.26 ± 1.69 N·m (20 ± 15 lb in)

   Temperature range −40° C (−40° F) to 121° C (250° F)

2. Use 5L-7200 Screw (6) and 9B-7233 Lockwasher (7) to install 8F-3437 Switch Lever (8) .

   Tighten to 16 ± 2 N·m (140 ± 20 lb in).

4. Install 454-9678 Cable As (10) .

5. Connect opposite end of 454-9678 Cable As (10) to Negative Battery Post (11) .

   Tighten to 7.2 ± 1.6 N·m (65 ± 14 lb in).

6. Fasten one end of 454-9679 Cable As (12) and 454-9676 Cable As (9) to Frame Ground (13). Install other end of 454-9679 Cable As (12) to Starter Ground.

   Tighten to 35 ± 3 N·m (26 ± 2 lb ft).

1. Use 7T-6799 Mounting Nut (1) to install 168-8280 Start Switch Gp (2) .

   Tighten the 7T-6799 Mounting Nut (1) to 13.6 ± 4.0 N·m (120 ± 35 lb in).

   Actuating force ... 0.564 N·m± 0.230 N·m (0.5 ± 0.5 lb in)

   Temperature range −40° C (−40° F) to 80° C (176° F)

2. Use 5L-7200 Screw (4) and 3B-4501 Lockwasher (5) to install 172-0074 Knob (3) onto the switch.

1. Use the dimensions in the above Illustration to locate the following plates.

2. Weld two 316-1676 Plates (1) .

3. Weld two 309-9484 Tie Plate (2) onto the welded 316-1676 Plates (1) .

1. Use four 159-2953 Flat Head Screws (1) and two 345-6073 Plates (2) to install 417-4607 Lift Plates (3) .

   Tighten bolts to 55 ± 8 N·m (41 ± 6 lb ft).

2. Use two 7X-2559 Bolts (4), two 6V-5845 Bolts (5), four 7X-0521 Hard Washers (6) and two 6V-7688 Locknuts (7) to install LH 442-6366 Plate (8) and RH 442-6367 Plate (9) on the machine.

   Tighten bolts to 55 ± 8 N·m (41 ± 6 lb ft).

1. Use 389-0447 Bracket As to install 426-5380 Flood Lamp Gp (1) on each side of the cab.

1. Tighten bracket to cab 55 ± 10 N·m (41 ± 7 lb ft).

   Tighten flood light to bracket 27 ± 8 N·m (240 ± 70 lb in).

   Temperature range −40° C (−40° F) to 85° C (185° F).

Specification

Single Point Lift

1. Use a Single Point Lift to lift the machine.
