Implement ECM

The following is a list of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) that are associated with the parameter circuits of the machine.

Table 1
Implement ECM (MID 82)
DTC  Description  System Response
268-2  Programmed Parameter Fault: Data Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect  The Implement ECM has determined that a configuration parameter is not programmed. The ECM will display the parameter causing the problem via Cat® ET.
2183-13  Payload Monitoring System: Out of Calibration  System must be calibrated before operating.

The Cat Production Measurement is an electronic system that provides an accurate weight of the material that is loaded by a wheel loader. The payload system is controlled by the Implement ECM. The operator commands to the Monitoring System Display are communicated via the Cat Data Link. The Implement ECM will then act on the command accordingly.

Possible causes for an FMI 2 Diagnostic code are:

  • A configuration parameter on the ECM is blank or invalid.

Possible causes for an FMI 13 Diagnostic code are:

  • The Implement ECM has never been calibrated.

  • The Implement ECM has lost all of the permanent information on the setup of the machine.

Schematic of the Parameter circuits

Note: The diagram above is a simplified schematic of the connections for the parameter circuits. The schematic is electrically correct. However, not all of the possible harness connectors are shown. Refer to the latest revision of the Electrical Schematic, UENR3117 for the complete schematic.

Diagnostic Trouble Code Procedure

Note: Prior to beginning this procedure, inspect the harness connectors that are involved in this circuit. Poor connections can often be the cause of a problem in an electrical circuit. Verify that all connections in the circuit are clean, secure, and in good condition. If a problem with a connection is found, correct the problem and verify that the diagnostic code is active before performing a troubleshooting procedure. For sensors powered via the fuse panel, check the condition of the appropriate fuse before beginning the troubleshooting procedure.

Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results
1. Identify The Active DTC Code Associated With The Suspect Circuit
Code present.
FMI 2 diagnostic code, proceed to Test Step 2.

FMI 13 diagnostic code, proceed to Test Step 4.

2. Verify The Configuration Of The Sales Model

A. Use the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) to verify that the ECM is configured to the default setting configuration.

The ECM has been configured correctly to the default setting configuration.
OK - The ECM has been configured correctly to the default setting configuration.

Repair: Verify that the new configuration has corrected the problem before attempting to operate the machine.

Proceed to Test Step 5.

NOT OK - The ECM does not have the appropriate sales model and product identification.

Proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Configure The ECM

A. Use Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) to reset the configuration to the default setting configuration. Reset the installation status to the correct type for the attachments that are installed on the machine.

The ECM is configured to the default setting configuration.
OK - The ECM has been configured correctly to the default setting configuration.

Repair: Verify that the new configuration has corrected the problem before attempting to operate the machine.

Proceed to Test Step 5.

NOT OK - The ECM does not have the appropriate sales model and product identification.

Proceed to Test Step 5.
Begin Process For FMI 13 Troubleshooting HERE
4. Calibration

A. Perform the calibration procedure for the solenoid. Refer to the Testing and Adjusting, "Calibration" section of this manual for the correct calibration procedure.

The calibration procedure was performed successfully.
OK - The calibration procedure was performed successfully.

Proceed to Test Step 5.

NOT OK - The calibration was not successful.

Repair: Repeat the calibration procedure for the solenoid.

Proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Check If The Diagnostic Code Remains

A. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch ON.

B. Clear all diagnostic codes.

C. Operate the machine.

D. Stop the machine and engage safety lock lever.

E. Check if diagnostic code for the alarm is active.

DTC Code is no longer active.
OK - Diagnostic code does not exist at this time. Initial diagnostic code may have been caused by poor electrical connection or short at one of the harness connections.

Repair: Resume normal machine operation.

NOT OK - Diagnostic trouble code has not been corrected.

Repair: If the diagnostic code has not been corrected , the ECM may have failed.

Prior to replacing the ECM, contact the Technical Communicator at your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time.

If the ECM requires replacement, refer to Troubleshooting, "ECM - Replace".
